2024 Lexus LBX Design Story

Introducing the highly-anticipated Lexus LBX: An extraordinary compact crossover that is making a significant impact in the ever-evolving world of automobiles. Over the years, there have been numerous rumors circulating about an upgraded Yaris Cross, and now, finally, we have the official unveiling of the LBX. This remarkable vehicle serves as the latest entry-level model from Lexus, filling the void left by the discontinuation of the CT hatchback. It is built on the GA-B platform, which it shares with its Toyota sibling, and boasts unique styling elements that perfectly align with Lexus’ distinctive design language, both inside and out.

With dimensions measuring 4190 millimeters (165 inches) in length, 1825 mm (71.8 in) in width, and 1545 mm (60.8 in) in height, the LBX proudly showcases its compact yet dynamically proportioned physique. To our surprise, it surpasses the Yaris Cross in size, and with a weight of 1,280 kilograms (2,821 pounds), it exudes a robust and substantial presence. The LBX will be available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, equipped with a continuously variable transmission that ensures seamless and efficient power delivery.

At the heart of the LBX lies a remarkable hybrid powertrain that deserves admiration. Anchored by a three-cylinder, 1.5-liter gasoline engine, this powertrain produces an impressive combined output of 134 horsepower (100 kilowatts) and a maximum torque of 185 Newton-meters (136 pound-feet). Thanks to this electrified powerplant, the LBX boasts an exhilarating acceleration time of 9.2 seconds from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h). It doesn’t stop there—the LBX also offers a remarkable maximum towing capacity of 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds).

To ensure a balanced and comfortable ride for all occupants, the LBX is equipped with a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam or a double wishbone rear suspension, depending on the drivetrain. Notably, the all-wheel-drive variant incorporates an electric motor at the rear, enhancing its performance and handling capabilities. To optimize weight distribution further, the LBX features an aluminum hood and utilizes molded resin wheel arches, rockers, and lower door sections.

When you step inside the LBX, you will be greeted by a modern and technologically advanced cabin that is a testament to Lexus’ commitment to innovation. The centerpiece is a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster that seamlessly integrates with an optional head-up display, allowing you to access vital information with just a glance. Complementing this cluster is a user-friendly 9.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enabling seamless integration with your smartphone. However, it’s worth noting that only Apple CarPlay offers wireless connectivity. To elevate the in-car audio experience, Lexus has collaborated with the renowned audio specialist Mark Levinson to deliver an immersive 13-speaker sound system, complete with a powerful subwoofer.

In terms of practicality, the LBX excels beyond expectations. The front-wheel-drive model offers a generous cargo capacity of 332 liters (11.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats in place, providing ample room for all your everyday needs. While the all-wheel-drive variant may sacrifice a bit of practicality due to the additional hardware, Lexus ensures that no compromises have been made in terms of quality and attention to detail. In fact, the LBX represents a significant milestone for Lexus, as it is the first model primarily developed in Europe, reflecting the brand’s unwavering commitment to meeting the unique preferences and demands of the European market.
