2024 Volkswagen Touareg R Line Revealed

The third iteration of the Touareg, which made its debut in 2018 but was not available in the United States, is undergoing a makeover to stay competitive in the highly profitable SUV market. Over the past five years, more than 200,000 units of the luxury SUV have been sold. While the revamped Touareg is already up for grabs in Europe, the range-topping R variant is set to follow on June 22.

So, what changes can we expect? Well, the Touareg is jumping on the bandwagon of incorporating light bars, which will now be present both at the front and rear of the vehicle. The size of the wheels offered ranges from 19 to 21 inches, but the R-Line and R models will boast a larger set of 22-inch wheels with a stylish Silicon Gray Matt finish. For the first time on a Volkswagen produced in Europe, specifically at the Bratislava plant in Slovakia, an illuminated badge will adorn the tailgate.

The front of the 2024 Touareg features redesigned headlights with a distinctive triple “L” theme. These new headlights utilize advanced matrix technology with micro-LEDs, similar to those found in the 2024 Porsche Cayenne. Called the IQ. Light HD LED matrix, each headlight is equipped with an impressive 19,216 individually controllable micro-LEDs. This cutting-edge technology ensures exceptional illumination on the darkest nights without causing glare for oncoming drivers. The taillights have also been updated to incorporate the same trio of L-shaped elements.

Moving inside, the 2024 Touareg retains a familiar interior design and comes standard with the Innovision Cockpit. This marketing term refers to the fusion of a fully digital 12-inch instrument cluster and a 15-inch touchscreen display. The infotainment system has been improved to support high-resolution HD map data with lane-level navigation. It also offers enhanced voice control and wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Furthermore, some of the switchgear now boasts a glossy black finish, and the ambient lighting has been updated with “Touareg” lettering on the passenger side of the dashboard. Volkswagen has upgraded the USB ports to more powerful USB-C connections and now offers an optional head-up display and a premium 730-watt Dynaudio sound system for an added cost.

Under the hood, the Touareg is exclusively powered by V6 engines, as the V8 diesel engine, which was also used in the Bentley Bentayga and Audi SQ7, was discontinued with the Last Edition model in 2020. Customers can choose from five different versions, starting with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine that produces 335 horsepower (250 kW). On the diesel side, the 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine is available in two power outputs: 228 horsepower (170 kW) and 282 horsepower (210 kW). For those interested in an electrified powertrain, the eHybrid combines a 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine with an electric motor, resulting in a total output of 375 horsepower (280 kW). In the range-topping Touareg R, the power is boosted to 456 horsepower (340 kW).

Irrespective of the engine choice, all versions of the Touareg come standard with 4Motion all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engineers have made revisions to both the standard steel suspension and the optional air suspension to enhance ride comfort. Additionally, a roof load sensor has been added, allowing the onboard computers to adjust transverse forces accordingly, improving the vehicle’s agility. Another noteworthy addition is the availability of performance tires as an optional extra.
