2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter Everest Revealed

After a lengthy hiatus of 15 years, marked by President Obama’s inauguration and the Black Eyed Peas’ chart-topping hits, the Toyota 4Runner emerges anew. This time around, Toyota has meticulously revamped its venerable off-road warrior while preserving its essence of ruggedness.

Rooted in the same TNGA-F truck framework as the refreshed Tacoma, the 2025 4Runner bids farewell to the venerable 4.0-liter V-6 and its companion, the five-speed automatic transmission. In its place, a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine takes center stage, generating 278 horsepower and an impressive 378 pound-feet of torque, marking an increase of 8 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque over its predecessor.

An alternative powertrain option is the I-Force Max hybrid, enhancing the output to 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. These engines pair with a modern eight-speed automatic transmission, sidelining the option for manual transmission.

The 2025 4Runner offers a suite of drivetrain options, including two-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, and full-time four-wheel drive. The inclusion of a limited-slip differential in 2WD variants and its combination with an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case in 4WD models underlines Toyota’s commitment to versatility. Enhanced by Toyota’s Active Traction Control (A-Trac), these features underscore the vehicle’s adaptability.

A notable innovation is the introduction of a Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism, improving the vehicle’s flexibility on uneven terrain at the touch of a button. This feature, along with the vehicle’s 32-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles, elevates its off-road capability.

The 2025 iteration introduces additional driving modes for navigating through Mud, Dirt, and Sand, complemented by a refined, quieter Crawl Control feature. The debut of the Trailhunter trim, inspired by the Tacoma, enriches the lineup with a model specifically tailored for the most challenging off-road conditions. This trim boasts 33-inch off-road tires, advanced Old Man Emu shocks, a bespoke roof rack, a raised air intake, a light bar, and robust steel skid plates for comprehensive protection.

Beyond the Trailhunter, the 4Runner range includes various trims, from the practical SR5 to the opulent Limited and the pinnacle Platinum and TRD Pro models. The Limited trim, targeting those who prioritize comfort, features upscale interior enhancements and distinctive black exterior accents.

Standard across the 2025 4Runner lineup is an 8.0-inch touchscreen, with a 14.0-inch version available in higher trims alongside a more extensive digital instrument cluster. These models support wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and a mix of USB-A and USB-C ports.

Safety remains a paramount concern, with Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 suite equipped as standard across the board, including functionalities like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assistance, road sign recognition, and high-beam assist.

Although the pricing for the 2025 model remains under wraps, expectations suggest a slight increase from the 2024 model’s starting price of $42,100. Slated for release later this year, the updated 4Runner is poised to captivate enthusiasts with its blend of traditional toughness and modern enhancements.
