New 2024 BMW X6 Revealed

The new and improved 2024 BMW X5 and X6 models are making their way to the public. With a fresh new look to their exterior, the X5 and X6 have received comprehensive updates to their powertrains and technology. The official debut of these cars will take place at the Amelia Concours d’Elegance in March and they will be rolled off the production line at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in April.

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of the latest generation of BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine in the X5 sDrive40i, xDrive40i, and X6 xDrive40i models. This new engine comes with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, which provides an additional electric motor producing 12 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. This results in a total output of 375 hp and 383 lb. ft. of torque, an improvement over the previous generation engine which had a power output of 335 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque.

According to BMW, the new X5 and X6 xDrive40i models can reach 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, a slight improvement over the previous 5.3-second acceleration time.

The X5 and X6 M60i xDrive models continue to use the tried and tested 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. This engine has also been updated with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, keeping the power output at 523 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque. These models can reach 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.

Another exciting update is the replacement of the previous xDrive45e model with the new X5 xDrive50e PHEV. The new engine system, made up of a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and electric motor, now boasts a power output of 483 hp and 516 pound-feet of torque, an improvement from the previous output of 389 hp and 443 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor on this new model produces 194 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque, with a temporary boost to 331 pound-feet of torque. The X5 xDrive50e can reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, compared to the previous 5.3-second acceleration time.

The X5 xDrive50e has also been fitted with a new 25.7 kilowatt-hour battery, replacing the previous 17.1 kWh unit. This battery can now be charged at up to 7.4 kW with AC power, providing an estimated electric-only range of 40 miles.

All three engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which now features an electric oil pump and torsion dampers for smoother shifts. For those looking for a sportier drive, the optional M Sport package includes a Sprint setting that puts the powertrain in its sportiest mode and provides full electric boost from the mild-hybrid system.

In terms of appearance, the refreshed X5 and X6 have received slight changes. The headlights are 35 millimeters narrower and the kidney grilles now have sculpted surfaces and revised lower fascias. The X5 comes with an optional illuminated grille, while the X6 comes standard with the M Sport package which includes an octagonal lower fascia. The V8-powered M60i xDrive models have a bold quad exhaust pipe design.

Potential buyers have a range of new color options to choose from, including Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic, and Frozen Pure Grey metallic. The X5 M60i xDrive is available in Marina Bay Blue metallic.
