Porsche Vision 357 Speedster Revealed

Porsche, the renowned sports car manufacturer, has celebrated the 30th anniversary of the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed in grand style, unveiling the striking Porsche Vision 357 Speedster. This new concept car serves as the counterpart to the closed Porsche Vision 357, which marked the beginning of the brand’s anniversary-year festivities.

While paying homage to the iconic 356 in terms of design, the all-electric Porsche Vision 357 Speedster is technologically based on the 718 GT4 e-Performance model. At the event held on the Duke of Richmond’s estate in West Sussex, Porsche presented a remarkable display of over 15 new and classic models. Among the highlights was the 356 No. 1 Roadster, the very first sports car ever produced by Porsche. Additionally, six Le Mans winners delighted the attending motorsport enthusiasts.

Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, emphasized the significance of the Porsche Vision 357, stating, “The Porsche Vision 357 pays tribute to the initial Porsche model line, Ferry Porsche’s dream sports car. Since the 356 has established itself as both a convertible and a coupé in the collective memory of the brand, the same principle applies to the concept car: there can only be two.” Mauer further added, “The Porsche Vision 357 Speedster embodies the essence of the brand, combining driving pleasure and dynamics with an extremely minimalist form. Just like the recently unveiled Mission X, this model demonstrates that the unmistakable Porsche DNA shines through, even with fresh design elements.”

Underneath its sleek exterior, the Vision 357 Speedster harnesses the technology of the Porsche 718 GT4 e-performance model. Therefore, the electric motors and battery technology are derived from the Mission R, while the chassis is borrowed from the 718 GT4 Clubsport. Following its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the design study will be showcased at the upcoming Rennsport Reunion event in the United States in late September.

The concept car exhibits the distinctive characteristics of a speedster, featuring a low, truncated windshield that accentuates its monolithic body. Along the right side of the vehicle, a tonneau cover reminiscent of those found on traditional open-top sports cars adds a touch of elegance. The driver’s headrest appears suspended in the air, thanks to the technical carbon roll-over element positioned behind it. Notably, the rear of the car houses the charge port door and the anchor for the classic speedster top.

The two-tone concept, showcasing Marble Grey and Grivelo Grey Metallic, draws inspiration from historic motorsport predecessors. For instance, the front fenders, designed to protect against flying rocks during races, and the front wings exhibit the darker Metallic hue. The Grivelo Grey Metallic paint is also applied to the front wheels, while Miami Blue accents, seen on the quick-release mechanisms of the wrap-around front bonnet, provide a fresh contrast.

The anniversary logo prominently displays the numbers “75,” representing the milestone, along with the years “1948” and “2023,” adorned in Grivelo Grey Metallic and Miami Blue. This color scheme presents an alternative to the decorative elements of the Vision 357 coupé, which incorporated red as an additional color. In an artistic touch, comic-style unicorns grace the area in front of the rear wheels, specifically drawn by Porsche designers for this concept car. The captivating “Speedster” logo is another result of their creative craftsmanship. Notably, the traditional exterior mirrors have been replaced by cameras, positioned further forward on the fenders, with a newly optimized aerodynamic shape reminiscent of wings.

Several other exterior design elements are shared with the Vision 357’s sister concept car. The front boasts a round four-point light signet, reminiscent of the iconic Porsche 356, while the rear lights are positioned behind a patterned array of points milled into the body. An additional nod to the initial Porsche model line can be seen in the vertical grille pattern at the rear, seamlessly integrating the third brake light.

The wide track of the Vision 357 Speedster exudes a robust presence and enhances driving stability. Equipped with 20-inch magnesium wheels adorned with carbon fiber hubcaps and central locks, the car pays tribute to the legendary Porsche wheels of the past, notably the 356 A and 356 B models with their strikingly large 205-millimeter bolt circle.

The interior of the car is minimalist and tailored to the driver’s needs. The low seating position exudes a quintessential sporty feel, with the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) seat shell integrated into the monocoque.
