2023 Nio ET5 Crash Test and Safety

Euro NCAP continues to play a pivotal role in driving continuous safety enhancements in passenger vehicles through its rating programme. As technology and society evolve, Euro NCAP adapts its rating requirements accordingly. In the year 2023, the safety testing protocol has been updated to incorporate new systems for detecting the presence of children, specifications for vehicle submergence, and the latest technologies that detect and respond to motorcyclists and other vulnerable road users. To achieve the prestigious five-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2023, manufacturers must now meet the stringent targets set by this updated test protocol.

Today, EuroNCAP proudly announces that two vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer NIO, which are newly introduced to the European market, have become the first to achieve the coveted five-star rating. These vehicles are the ET5, a Large Family car, and the EL7, a Large SUV.

To attain a high Euro NCAP safety rating, a vehicle must excel in three key areas: passive safety, active safety, and post-crash rescue information. Passive safety refers to a vehicle’s ability to protect occupants and vulnerable users during a crash, while active safety focuses on preventing or minimizing the consequences of a collision. Both the NIO ET5 and EL7 demonstrate commendable levels of passive safety, offering excellent protection for the knees and femurs of the driver, passenger, and occupants of varying sizes and positions within the car.

What sets the NIO ET5 and EL7 apart is their participation in the brand-new Euro NCAP Active Safety scenarios introduced in 2023. These scenarios include Car-to-Motorcycle, Car-to-Car Crossing, Car-to-Car Head-on, Dooring, and Driver State Monitoring. In most of the test cases, both vehicles displayed exceptional performance, showcasing the remarkable progress that Active Safety technology has made over the years in avoiding increasingly complex crash types. However, there is still room for improvement, particularly in some of the more challenging scenarios, such as Car-to-Car Crossing at higher speeds. The 2023 scenarios set a high standard for future advancements in vehicle safety.

The NIO ET5 and EL7 are equipped with advanced eCall systems, which promptly alert emergency services in the event of a crash. Moreover, these vehicles feature a system that automatically applies the brakes after an impact, reducing the risk of secondary collisions. NIO has also demonstrated that if either vehicle were to enter the water, the doors and windows would remain functional for a sufficient duration, allowing the occupants to safely escape.
