US-Spec 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Revealed

Hailing from Chattanooga, Tennessee, the seven-passenger Atlas emerges as a technologically advanced and spacious contender in the bustling realm of family SUVs. This Volkswagen masterpiece embodies the brand’s signature driving dynamics and meticulous attention to detail, all while maintaining an enticing price point. The 2024 edition of this remarkable vehicle presents an array of upgrades, including enhanced technology, revamped interior designs, and an invigorated powertrain.

Underneath the hood of every Atlas model lies the heart of Volkswagen’s engineering prowess—the remarkable “Evo4” 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI® EA888 engine. Boasting a remarkable output of 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque when fueled with regular gasoline, this powerhouse exhibits a substantial increase of 34 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque over its predecessor. Notably, the new engine also delivers comparable horsepower and increased torque across a wider range of revolutions per minute (1600-4500 rpm) compared to the previous six-cylinder variants.

Enveloped within the Atlas is the latest generation of the 4Motion with Active Control all-wheel-drive system, purposefully designed to preempt wheel slippage and effectively counteract traction loss. Employing an advanced control mechanism tailored to specific driving conditions, this system ensures optimal performance. When operating under lighter loads or during coasting, power is primarily sent to the front wheels while the rear wheels disengage, a measure aimed at conserving fuel. However, in situations where additional traction is required, the rear wheels can instantaneously engage through the activation of the center differential, which is seamlessly managed by an electro-hydraulic oil pump.

The Atlas commands attention with its bold and distinctive front-end styling. The 2024 model year brings forth a renewed design, further distinguishing the Atlas from its counterpart, the Atlas Cross Sport. Dominating the frontal view is a broad chrome four-bar grille, complemented by the presence of LED headlights equipped with the newly standardized Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS). SEL Premium R-Line models boast a sleek gloss-black grille, exuding an air of sophistication. The Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) elegantly encircle the headlights, offering a seamless aesthetic. On all trims except the base, these lights extend into an illuminated lightbar crowning the illuminated VW logo, accentuating the vehicle’s unmistakably premium allure. A refreshed front fascia integrates well-placed air intakes, culminating in a harmonious visual package.

The interior design of the Atlas reflects the timeless Volkswagen ethos—clean, functional, and imbued with a premium essence. Ergonomically optimized driver controls enhance usability and engagement behind the wheel, ensuring a seamless driving experience. The seat position, shifter height, and pedal spacing are meticulously crafted to maximize driver comfort, facilitating extended journeys with ease.
