Hence, it should come as no astonishment that, in various corners of the globe, the conventional notion of the C5 nameplate as a traditional sedan has transcended into an Aircross CUV contender. Back in 2017, Citroen unveiled the C5 Aircross, a compact crossover SUV, which is presently being manufactured and readily available in numerous regions worldwide, including its homeland France, as well as China and India.

To cater to the European market, the C5 Aircross underwent a rejuvenation process in the early part of last year. Instead, the forthcoming C5 Aircross Hybrid 136, destined for the European market, will feature a reimagined 1.2-liter PureTech three-cylinder engine, comprising 40% newly developed components. This powerplant will be seamlessly paired with an innovative electrified dual-clutch e-DCS6 transmission, accompanied by a 21kW electric motor.

Citroen proudly declares that this fresh powertrain configuration delivers an all-electric urban driving experience, potentially reducing fuel consumption by 30% in urban areas. The revamped PureTech engine generates an impressive 136 ps (equivalent to 134 horsepower) and 230 Nm (equivalent to 170 lb-ft) of torque to accomplish this feat. Simultaneously, the permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor contributes up to 21 kW (equivalent to 28 horsepower) and 55 Nm (equivalent to 41 lb-ft) of torque, empowering the CUV to operate on 100% electric power during instances of low torque requirements, such as at low speeds, during maneuvering, or while decelerating.

Essentially, this powertrain represents a bridge, or perhaps a blending, between 48V MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) systems and conventional hybrid setups. The package also incorporates a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack, discreetly concealed beneath the front passenger’s seat, boasting a respectable capacity of 432Wh. As is customary, the automaker is eager to emphasize that this setup does not necessitate plug-in recharging infrastructure, considering it a matter of pride in the present era. At present, we have only been acquainted with the specifications of the UK-spec version, with order books slated to open next month and initial deliveries expected in July.
