Introducing the Lexus LBX: A Breakthrough Crossover for the European Market
Positioned at the lowest rung of the global Lexus lineup, the Lexus LBX sets its sights primarily on the European market. This compact and city-friendly crossover takes inspiration from the Toyota Yaris Cross, a crossover that isn’t available in the United States, and comes equipped with a standard hybrid powertrain.
Measuring a diminutive 164.9 inches in length, 71.8 inches in width, and 60.8 inches in height, the LBX stands as the smallest offering within the Lexus range. To provide some perspective, the smallest Lexus crossover currently available in the United States is the UX, which spans 177 inches in length, 72.4 inches in width, and approximately 60 inches in height. Even the CT, a small hatchback that bid farewell to our shores after the 2017 model year, surpassed the LBX by approximately 6.4 inches in length.
Geared toward the European market, the LBX — an abbreviation for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover — aims to attract a fresh, younger demographic to Lexus showrooms. Sporting a vaguely Yaris Cross-like form, the LBX boasts its own distinctive design language, characterized by angular headlights, a refined interpretation of the iconic spindle grille, a sleek light bar spanning the rear end, and an optional two-tone roof panel.
Koichi Suga, the general manager of Lexus Design, elaborated, “We have deconstructed the spindle grille to pave the way for a new design. We have successfully crafted a new front face identity that is markedly distinct from its predecessor, yet retains its unmistakable Lexus DNA.”
Inside the LBX, drivers will appreciate the uncluttered layout, featuring a wrap-around dashboard, an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9.8-inch touchscreen for the user-friendly Lexus Link Connect infotainment system. The extensive list of standard and optional features includes luxurious leather upholstery, seamless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a digital key that can be shared with another driver, and an immersive Mark Levinson sound system.
Under the hood, the LBX harnesses the power of a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. This system comprises a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, a nickel-metal hybride (NiMH) battery pack, and two motor-generator units. Generating a combined output of 136 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque, this setup channels its power to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). For those seeking enhanced traction, all-wheel drive is available at an additional cost, with an extra electric motor delivering power to the rear wheels. While specific details remain undisclosed, engineers have fine-tuned the powertrain to deliver an exhilarating driving experience. Additionally, the LBX boasts the capability to travel short distances solely on electric power.
Beneath its sleek sheet metal, the LBX rests upon the modular GA-B platform, which also underpins several of Toyota’s compact models, including the aforementioned Yaris Cross and the Aygo X, exclusive to the European market. Lexus emphasizes that it has made significant adjustments to the architecture to meet its own stringent requirements.
Beginning in early 2024, Lexus dealerships throughout Europe will be welcoming the arrival of the LBX, with high expectations for it to become one of the brand’s top-selling models across the pond. While pricing details are yet to be released, a Lexus spokesperson has confirmed that the LBX will not be offered for sale in the United States.
