2024 Mercedes AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ Coupe in Patagonia Red

The original AMG GT had its roots in the shortened SLS AMG platform. However, the new kid on the block, the 2024 model, has chosen to dance with the new SL roadster, sharing a robust aluminum underpinning. This shift in foundation has led to some interesting changes in the car’s mechanics. Instead of the unique rear dual-clutch transaxle of its predecessor, it now boasts a conventionally mounted nine-speed multi-clutch gearbox. Additionally, the dry sump oiling system that once allowed the original AMG GT’s engine to nestle low in the chassis has been bid farewell. This transformation, coupled with the new gearbox, has paved the way for the adoption of all-wheel drive, a departure from the previous rear-wheel-drive setup.

The 2024 model also steps up in size across the board when compared to its predecessor.

Beneath the hood, the engine remains a trusty 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, an AMG favorite for several years. The entry-level GT 55 flexes its muscles with 469 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, the GT 63, the star of the show here, cranks the power up a notch, boasting 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, mirroring the old AMG GT R’s performance figures. The new numerical naming scheme replaces the puzzling all-letters naming convention of the previous model, now aligning itself neatly with the SL.

Mercedes claims that the GT 63 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 3.1 seconds, with a top speed soaring to 196 mph. In comparison, the GT 55 takes a slightly more leisurely 3.8 seconds to hit 60 mph and maxes out at 183 mph. The all-wheel-drive system offers full variability, allowing torque to be distributed, with up to 50 percent sent to the front axle or a full 100 percent to the rear. This ensures that the GT retains its playful rear-wheel-drive characteristics, promising an exciting and controlled driving experience.

So, while the AMG GT has evolved and embraced change, it remains a thrilling contender in the performance car arena.
