2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata Revealed in Japan

Mazda recently unveiled the latest iteration of its MX-5 Miata in Japan, known as the Roadster or Roadster RF in that market. Often referred to as the “ND3,” this model builds upon the 2019 update, known as the “ND2,” which introduced a more potent version of the 2.0-liter engine. While this new version will initially launch in Japan in mid-January 2024, it is expected to make its way to global markets in the following months.

In the Land of the Rising Sun, enthusiasts can already place their preorders for the 2024 Miata. One notable change is the adoption of new LED headlights, now seamlessly integrated with the daytime running lights. In previous iterations, these lights were located in the bumper and featured multiple dots, a design that had remained largely unchanged since the 2015 ND1. Mazda has also discreetly updated the taillights and incorporated LEDs throughout, even in the turn signals.

On the left side of the front grille, a modification has been made to accommodate a radar sensor for adaptive cruise control, which incorporates Smart Brake Support. This system can automatically halt the car when reversing at speeds of up to 9 mph (15 km/h) upon detecting an obstacle. Completing the exterior revisions are the introduction of the Aero Gray Metallic paint and new wheel designs available in 16- and 17-inch sizes.

Moving inside the cabin, the aging infotainment system has been replaced by a more modern 8.8-inch setup, as seen in the JDM-spec 2024 Mazda2 and CX-3. This update not only gives the dashboard a sleeker look with thinner bezels but also promises improved functionality. The previous system suffered from lag and an outdated user interface. Additionally, there is a new tan interior option paired with a beige top, a nod to classic roadster aesthetics.

Although not explicitly mentioned in the official announcement, images reveal the inclusion of a frameless rearview mirror, an SOS red button, a slightly refreshed instrument cluster, and what appear to be USB-C ports.

Under the hood, the Miata ND3 receives a newly developed asymmetrical limited-slip differential, enhancing stability for models equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox. Engineers have also made adjustments to the electric power steering system, reducing friction and delivering a more natural and responsive feel. Another notable addition is the DSC-Track mode for the dynamic stability control system, which intervenes only when the driver loses control of the vehicle.

For those outside the United States, the 1.5-liter engine has gained four horsepower when running on high-octane fuel. Meanwhile, the larger 2.0-liter unit paired with the manual transmission promises improved response during both acceleration and deceleration.

The introduction of the ND3 model signals that the current-generation Miata will continue to be available for at least a few more years. This decision is sure to please purists, especially since Mazda has stated that future models will need to be electrified to meet stringent emissions regulations.
