New 2024 Mercedes eACTROS 600 Revealed

Daimler Truck has introduced its latest addition to the eActros family of electric semi-trailer trucks, the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600, which boasts the most extended range among its counterparts.

In a recent trial, this electric truck successfully completed a demanding 330-mile journey through the challenging terrain of the Alps while carrying a hefty 80,000-pound load. Daimler Truck proudly states that the eActros 600 can transport a maximum payload of 48,500 pounds when equipped with a standard trailer, pushing its maximum gross weight to 97,000 pounds.

What sets the eActros 600 apart is its ability to cover significant distances on a single charge. With the truck’s batteries replenished during a mandatory driver break, it can achieve an impressive 660-mile range, putting it on par with traditional diesel-powered trucks.

Notably, Daimler Truck also offers alternative versions of the eActros, including the 300 and 400 models, which provide around 205 and 250 miles of range, respectively. For comparison, Tesla’s Semi, with a gross weight of 81,000 pounds, boasts a quoted 500-mile range.

The eActros 600’s power source comprises three individual battery packs with a total capacity of 621 kWh. These batteries utilize lithium-iron-phosphate cells and can be rapidly charged at rates of up to 400 kW using a CCS charger. Like Tesla’s Semi, the eActros 600 also supports megawatt charging, allowing the batteries to reach a 20-80% charge in roughly 30 minutes with a megawatt charger.

The eActros 600 is driven by two electric motors capable of delivering a continuous output of 536 horsepower, with a temporary peak power of 804 horsepower. These motors are situated on a single axle and are coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the truck features two power take-offs, one mechanical and the other electric (AC or DC).

Daimler Truck places great emphasis on durability, ensuring that the eActros 600 adheres to the same rugged standards as their diesel-powered counterparts. This means owners can anticipate covering a substantial 745,000 miles over a decade without major issues. Even after this period, Daimler Truck predicts that the batteries will still retain around 80% of their original range.

Safety is a paramount concern, and Daimler Truck equips the eActros 600 with a range of advanced safety features. The truck boasts sensors that provide a comprehensive 270-degree view, feeding data to electronic driver-assist systems. These systems include forward and turning collision warnings with automatic emergency braking, as well as pedestrian and cyclist detection. Additionally, a lane change assist feature monitors the trailer’s length and can steer the truck back into its lane if the driver overlooks a neighboring vehicle.

The eActros 600 is slated to begin production in late 2024. Notably, Daimler Truck is exploring alternative power sources and is currently testing an eActros prototype fitted with a hydrogen fuel cell stack instead of batteries. In a recent test, this hydrogen-electric truck managed to cover an impressive 650 miles with just one fill of hydrogen.

While the eActros is marketed as a Mercedes, Daimler Truck boasts a diverse portfolio of commercial vehicle brands. This includes Freightliner, Western Star, Fuso, BharatBenz, and Rizon truck brands, as well as various bus brands, many of which offer their own zero-emission solutions.
