2024 Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge Rear Wheel Drive RWD Increase Range

As Volvo propels its electric vehicle (EV) lineup into the future, significant enhancements grace the 2024 C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge models. The duo welcomes a fresh rear-wheel-drive (RWD) single-motor version boasting a heftier battery and significantly augmented range. Concurrently, the preexisting dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) renditions revel in range improvements courtesy of heightened efficiency.

The novel RWD variants feature a 248-horsepower electric motor and a 79.0-kWh battery, endowing the C40 Recharge with a 297-mile range, while the less aerodynamic XC40 Recharge receives a marginally reduced 293-mile range. Furthermore, these models accommodate a superior 200-kilowatt DC fast-charging rate, enabling a swift 10-to-80-percent charge in a mere 28 minutes, according to Volvo.

Persisting into 2024, the dual-motor setup maintains its 402-horsepower output. However, Volvo divulges that the electric motors now possess distinct characteristics: the rear motor generates 255 horsepower, while the front motor employs an asynchronous design that can disengage when unnecessary. Enhanced efficiency, supported by newly-introduced aerodynamic 19-inch wheels, ensures the AWD models’ 75.0-kWh battery supplies a considerably expanded range. The XC40 now flaunts a 254-mile range, a 31-mile increase, whereas the C40’s range jumps from 226 to 257 miles.

Although Volvo has yet to reveal pricing specifics, it’s plausible that the RWD iterations will be priced lower than their 2023 C40 and XC40 Recharge predecessors—exclusively featuring dual-motor powertrains and commencing in the mid-$50,000 bracket. Volvo anticipates launching these revamped 2024 EVs in the United States during the latter half of this calendar year.
