2023 BMW X1 and iX1 Long Wheelbase Debut In Shanghai

BMW, the esteemed automobile manufacturer, made quite an entrance at the Auto Shanghai event with a lineup of concept cars that we’re all familiar with. However, the company also presented the latest version of its electric flagship sedan, the M70, which is an upgraded version of the i7. Additionally, the BMW booth boasted the presence of the X1 SUV, which, although not unique to China, had some variations in its Chinese model. Interestingly, the X1 and electric iX1 long-wheelbase models made their grand debut in China at the Shanghai show this year.

When compared to its Western counterparts, the Chinese X1 has a longer wheelbase, extending four inches up to 110.3 inches, and a similar overall length of 181.7 inches. This subtle but significant difference is more noticeable when you observe the lengthier rear door, which adds a considerable amount of legroom to the back seat of the X1.

Prospective buyers in China can choose from two trim levels for the X1: the SDrive20Li, which boasts a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine producing 154 hp, and the sDrive25Li, which comes with the familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 201 hp. For those who prefer all-wheel drive, the xDrive models are also available.

BMW has not released any specific details about the iX1 sold in China, except for its unique grille design. However, it is known that the iX1 will feature a dual-motor design.

For North America, the 2023 BMW X1 made its debut in May 2022 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine generating 241 hp. On the other hand, the iX1 premiered just a month later with a promise of 313 combined hp from a dual-motor powertrain. Unfortunately, the electric version is not available in North America, unlike its gasoline-powered sibling. Nonetheless, there is a possibility that the iX1 offered in China may have similar specifications to the other markets, although this information is yet to be confirmed.
