The Mercedes SL is an iconic car that has often come with a big V12 engine. But, the newest model, the R232, started with a smaller V8 engine. AMG, a company that makes high-performance versions of Mercedes cars, did something surprising in April 2022. They put a small four-cylinder engine in the SL43 model. Now, in May 2023, this basic version of the fancy convertible car has been approved for sale in the United States. The starting price is $109,900, plus $1,150 for delivery fees, and this is before any extras.

This price makes it $27,500 cheaper than the SL55 model and $68,200 less than the SL63 model. It uses a similar engine to the one found in the small AMG “45” cars and the new AMG C63 car. Because the SL is a rear-wheel-drive car, this engine is placed lengthwise, or “longitudinally”. What’s more, the SL43 is the first car to be made with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, a technology first used in Formula 1 racing.

This small four-cylinder engine, which is 2.0 liters in size, is pretty powerful. It gives out 375 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, all sent to the rear wheels. The tech borrowed from Formula 1 involves a small electric motor, about 1.6 inches in size, that’s attached to the turbocharger. This motor’s job is to speed up the compressor wheel before the exhaust gas gets there, which helps the car respond faster when you press the gas pedal.

The smart little engine can make the car accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 170 mph. We don’t know the weight of the model for the US yet, but we do know that the one sold in Europe weighs about 3,990 pounds.

The 2023 SL43 will arrive at US dealerships this summer. It only comes with rear-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It has 19-inch wheels as standard, but you can choose bigger 20 and 21-inch wheels if you want. The basic SL has a different front and rear look and round exhaust tips to make it different from the models with a V8 engine.
