German company ZF, renowned for producing automatic transmissions, airbags, and advanced driver assistance systems, recently introduced a functional prototype of a steering module that has the potential to greatly reduce the need for three-point turns. This innovative creation, called the Easy Turn Strut, consists of a strut suspension axle capable of significantly decreasing a car’s turning radius. When combined with a rear-wheel steering system, the Easy Turn Strut can enable front wheels to turn at angles of up to 80 degrees, thereby reducing the turning radius to as little as 18.7 feet.
Even in vehicles without rear-wheel steering, ZF’s Easy Turn technology can still reduce the turning radius to 22.3 feet, surpassing the average turning radius of approximately 33 to 36 feet that most modern cars currently achieve.
ZF recently showcased this groundbreaking invention on a prototype BMW i3 at its headquarters in Friedrichshafen. In a captivating video demonstration, the electric hatchback showcased its ability to execute tight turns, potentially revolutionizing parallel parking and maneuvering in confined spaces.
According to ZF, the Easy Turn Strut is most effective in rear-wheel drive all-electric vehicles since they offer a more accessible platform without an engine or other mechanical components obstructing the two front wheels.
Furthermore, ZF claims that this solution is both cost-effective and viable, with an estimated time frame of two and a half years required to bring it to market, as reported by Automotive News. This development is exciting news for urban drivers who often face challenges in maneuvering through crowded spaces.
ZF is not the sole company addressing the issue of urban maneuverability. Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai’s spare parts and autonomous driving division, unveiled the e-Corner system earlier this year. This system permits all four wheels to rotate at angles of up to 90 degrees. Hyundai’s comprehensive solution integrates an electric motor, electric damper, brake by wire, and steer by wire, making it adaptable to various plug-in vehicles without compromising interior space.
