Porsche Mission X Walkaround

When people reach the ripe age of 75, just staying healthy and alive is quite a gift. But for Porsche’s 75th birthday, the famous sports car maker has a remarkable present in mind—an ultra-fast car set to be the speediest production vehicle ever to conquer the Nurburgring racetrack. What’s even more fascinating? It’s going to be an electric car (EV).

Well, at least, it might be, if Porsche goes ahead with making it. Right now, the supercar only exists as a concept called Mission X, which gives us a strong hint about what Porsche’s ambitious project could entail.

The scope of this endeavor is seriously impressive. Porsche says that Mission X will have an outstanding power-to-weight ratio, with at least one horsepower for every 2.2 pounds of weight, thanks to an innovative all-electric 900-volt setup. If we compare this with Porsche’s earlier supercar, the 2015 918 Spyder, which weighed about 3,700 pounds, we can guess that Mission X could have around 1,700 horsepower. That’s almost twice as much power as the Spyder, which once set a record as the first production car to complete a lap around the Nurburgring in under seven minutes.

But we have to remember that this is just an estimate because we don’t know how much Mission X weighs yet. Still, if the power figures hold true, it would definitely make this supercar the most powerful road-legal Porsche ever, surpassing even the track-focused 919 Hybrid Evo, which broke lap records all over the world.

For their 75th anniversary and right before the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans’ 100th anniversary, Porsche introduced the Mission X concept. The design of Mission X takes inspiration from Le Mans, with doors that open upward and forward, similar to the classic 917. This unique look combines a touch of modernity with a glass bubble around the passenger compartment, protected by a carbon fiber skeleton. The design nods to historic Le Mans prototypes while showcasing a contemporary twist.

Inside this unique cabin, you’ll find some interesting features. Both the driver and passenger seats have contrasting colors and come with six-point harnesses. A dash feature, reminiscent of the 959, can hold either analog or digital stopwatches.

Despite its expected immense power, Mission X keeps its size relatively compact. It’s 177 inches long and 78.7 inches wide, which is six inches shorter than the 918 Spyder but over two inches wider. Astonishingly, the wheelbase remains the same.

Like the Taycan, Mission X runs on electric power. But Porsche has put the battery pack behind the seats, adopting an “e-core” setup to mimic the handling of a mid-engined car.

We’ve already seen mind-boggling levels of power and performance from brands like Rimac, Tesla, and Lucid with their electric sedans. So, if Porsche wants to win over enthusiasts with this next-gen supercar, it will need to deliver horsepower figures in the four-digit range. The thought of such immense power combined with Porsche’s engineering skill and racing expertise is genuinely exciting.

But remember, whether this supercar becomes a reality or not ultimately depends on Porsche’s decision to move forward with its development.
