2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter Explained

Toyota recently announced a new addition to its truck lineup, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter. This is an off-road, overlanding truck developed by Toyota engineers. The Trailhunter was first introduced as a concept based on the Tundra model at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

The Trailhunter is a top-end model that joins a list of other Tacoma trims, including the SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro. Each of these trims has specific suspension tuning to cater to different driving preferences. Notably, the Trailhunter sports a unique shock setup and multi-link, coil-sprung rear suspension, which is only present in the upper trims.

This new truck comes with a four-door Double Cab and offers a choice between a 5-foot bed or a 6-foot bed. It also has impressive standard equipment, similar to the high-end TRD Pro. Powering the Trailhunter is the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain, a combination of a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine and a 48-hp electric motor, generating a total of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It’s coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The interior is packed with features like a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 14-inch multimedia display, head-up display, heated and cooled front seats, and a portable JBL FLEX Bluetooth speaker. Safety is ensured by the standard Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 3.0.

Toyota collaborated with Australian company ARB to equip the Trailhunter with an Old Man Emu (OME) position sensitive 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks. The suspension is designed for off-road control and load carrying capacity, making the Trailhunter ideal for overlanding. The Trailhunter also has a unique high-mount air intake “snorkel” and an integrated air compressor for adjusting tire pressure.

For protection, the Trailhunter is fitted with steel skid plates that shield the front end, transmission, and rear differential. It also has frame-mounted rock rails and a high-clearance exhaust tip to prevent damage.

The Trailhunter also offers options for customization with the Associated Accessory Products (AAP) program. Through this program, customers can choose from a range of camping and adventure accessories straight from the dealership.

The Tacoma Trailhunter is set to hit the market in early 2024. Though Toyota has not disclosed the pricing yet, it is expected to be competitive with the other high-end Tacoma models. This new overlanding rig promises to bring a new dimension of adventure to Toyota’s truck lineup.
