Porsche Carrera GT: All You Need To Know

The Porsche Carrera GT can be traced back to two discontinued racing cars – the 911 GT1 and LMP1-98. Porsche originally intended to create a new Le Mans prototype for the 1999 season with a turbocharged flat-six engine. However, the project was later redesigned to feature a V10 engine, which was secretly built by Porsche for the Footwork Formula One team in 1992 but was never used. Despite two days of successful testing, the project was cancelled in mid-1999 due to the company’s focus on developing the Cayenne SUV with Volkswagen and Audi and the speculation that VW-Audi chairman Ferdinand Piëch wanted to prevent competition from Porsche for Audi’s new Le Mans Prototype, the Audi R8.

Porsche did keep part of the project alive by showcasing a concept car called the Carrera GT at the 2000 Paris Motor Show. The positive response from the public and the success of the Cayenne allowed Porsche to develop a road-legal version, which was produced in small numbers at the company’s Leipzig manufacturing facility. The Carrera GT went on sale in the US in January 2004. The original plan was to produce 1,500 cars, but the production run was cut short in 2005 due to changing airbag regulations in the US. By the end of production in 2006, over 1,270 cars had been sold worldwide, with the majority sold in the US.

The Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7-liter V10 engine that produces 603-hp and has a top speed of 205 mph. The car has a six-speed manual transmission, large side inlets and air dams for engine cooling, and a carbon fiber rear bonnet. It also features Porsche’s latest ceramic composite braking system and an electronically operated rear wing that deploys at speeds over 70 mph. The interior is trimmed in soft leather, with a Bose audio system and navigation system included as standard. The ignition is located to the left of the steering wheel, a placement that dates back to early days of Le Mans racing.
