The Porsche 356, a sports car born in the late 1940s, marked the beginning of Porsche’s journey into the world of automobile manufacturing. It started its life under the Austrian company Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH from 1948 to 1949 and later found its home with the German company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH from 1950 to 1965.
This car, known for its simplicity and agility, followed a unique design – a lightweight, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door model. It came in both hardtop coupé and open configurations, making it versatile for various driving experiences. Over the years, Porsche continually improved its engineering, which played a significant role in its success on the racetracks and its popularity among car enthusiasts.
The production journey of the 356 began in 1948 in Gmünd, Austria, where around 50 cars were crafted. However, in 1950, the manufacturing hub shifted to Zuffenhausen, Germany, and the production of the 356 continued until April 1965. Interestingly, this continued even after the introduction of its successor, the 911, in September 1964. Out of the approximately 76,000 units produced originally, nearly half of them still exist today.
When it first hit the market in 1948, the Porsche 356 coupe was priced at $3,750, which is equivalent to about $45,700 in today’s currency. On the other hand, the cabriolet version came with a slightly higher price tag of $4,250, roughly translating to $51,800 in 2022.
