Level 3 highly automated driving available in the new BMW 7 Series

The BMW 7 Series is set to revolutionize the driving experience with the introduction of the BMW Personal Pilot L3, a Level 3 automated driving system. This cutting-edge feature, available from December for installation in vehicles from March (except for the i7 eDrive50 and i7 M70 xDrive), allows drivers to temporarily shift their attention away from driving tasks in certain conditions. Priced at 6,000 euros in Germany, this system symbolizes a significant leap in automotive technology.

At the heart of the BMW Personal Pilot L3 is its ability to completely take over driving responsibilities under specific circumstances, as outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This advancement lets drivers engage in other activities, like checking emails or making phone calls, when traveling at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) on certain highways. A notable aspect of this system is its functionality in low-light conditions, owing to its advanced sensor technology.

The 7 Series is the first in the BMW lineup to offer both Level 2 and Level 3 automated driving functions. The BMW Highway Assistant, a Level 2 feature, is already available in all new 5 Series models, allowing hands-free driving while maintaining driver responsibility. It includes the unique Active Lane Change Assistant, enhancing long-distance driving comfort and safety.

The key distinction between Level 2 and Level 3 systems lies in responsibility. In Level 2, the driver must remain alert and ready to take control at any time, a requirement enforced by an onboard attentiveness camera. Conversely, Level 3, as in the 7 Series, gives drivers the liberty to divert their focus from driving, allowing them to utilize in-car digital services, like streaming videos, while the car autonomously navigates up to 60 km/h.

The BMW Personal Pilot L3 is user-friendly, with clear display symbols and steering wheel buttons for activation and deactivation. However, drivers must remain prepared to resume control when prompted by visual and acoustic signals. If the driver fails to respond, the vehicle safely comes to a stop.

This technology suite in the new 7 Series includes a live HD map, precise GPS, 360° sensors, and a 5G link to the BMW Cloud for real-time updates and accurate vehicle positioning. Enhanced with the latest ultrasonic, radar sensors, and a 3D lidar sensor, the BMW Personal Pilot L3 ensures a high level of reliability and safety, even in dark conditions, setting a new benchmark in automated driving.

In summary, BMW’s introduction of Level 3 automated driving in the new 7 Series not only enhances comfort and safety on public roads but also marks a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous driving technology.
