In a fleeting glance, one might struggle to identify this extraordinary automobile as a Lamborghini. The LMDh race cars adhere to specific rules and regulations, but if you look closely, you can still spot Lamborghini-esque lighting features seamlessly integrated into the car’s body panels, emphasized by sharp contours. The awe-inspiring colossal wing and vertical tail fin positioned at the rear unquestionably leave a lasting impression. And let’s not overlook the vibrant color – Verde Mantis, accompanied by a racing stripe paying tribute to the Italian flag. This remarkable machine is none other than the Lamborghini SC63, poised to make a remarkable impact on the racing circuit next year.
This Lamborghini creation has been the subject of much anticipation and teasing over the past few months. Although its initial appearance may not immediately evoke the image of a Lamborghini, careful observation reveals familiar design elements. We’ve already mentioned the Y-shaped lights, a relatively recent trend from this respected Italian supercar manufacturer. The car’s monocoque chassis, as per LMDh regulations, is sourced from Liger, a select group of suppliers. However, Lamborghini’s Centro Stile design group seized this opportunity to combine functional components with NACA ducts reminiscent of the iconic Countach and Revuelto wheel arches, among other captivating features.
What propels this extraordinary beast is an entirely new engine developed by Lamborghini specifically for their racing program. It boasts a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 configuration with the turbochargers cleverly positioned outside the engine to optimize cooling, maintenance, and weight distribution. Although precise power figures for the engine alone remain undisclosed, when combined with the obligatory hybrid system mandated for its class, the total output reaches the maximum allowable limit of 671 horsepower. The hybrid setup consists of a motor generator, a battery, and a Bosch electronic control unit. While all LMDh cars share a common transmission, Lamborghini has finely tuned the gear ratios to suit their distinct purposes more effectively.
Ultimately, the racetrack will be graced by two SC63 race cars. One of them will participate in the full FIA World Endurance Championship season for 2024, while the other will embark on an adventure in the North American Endurance Championship organized by IMSA. Both cars will proudly represent the esteemed Iron Lynx team, which has already gained Lamborghini experience with a Huracan GT3 Evo 2 in IMSA and the GT World Challenge Europe series.
However, it’s important to note that the SC63 is not yet fully prepared for racing. Extensive testing and development will continue in preparation for its grand debut in the 2024 racing season. Lamborghini aims to achieve greatness with its factory drivers, including the seasoned Mirko Bortolotti and Andrea Caldarelli, as well as the Formula 1 veterans Daniil Kvyat and Romain Grosjean, who bring their expertise from the world of Formula 1 into the realm of endurance racing.
