Hyundai Ioniq 5 Performs 360 Degree Turn and Crab Walk

Presenting the e-Corner System, a ground-breaking innovation installed on a Hyundai Ioniq 5 prototype, which made its debut in the public sphere, showcasing its fascinating capabilities like effortlessly parallel parking in snug spots by manipulating wheel angles and executing a 180-degree pivot to extricate from a cul-de-sac.

Captured on film at Hyundai Mobis’ testing facility in Seosan, South Korea, and neighboring thoroughfares, the e-Corner System exhibited an assortment of driving modalities, substantiating its efficacy in real-life situations.

The footage highlights the remarkable “crab walk” feature, where all four wheels swivel 90 degrees, facilitating lateral movement and simplifying the parallel parking conundrum, even in tight quarters.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 prototype is also observed executing a “zero turn”, where the front wheels rotate inward while the rear wheels pivot outward, achieving a 360-degree idle spin. This ingenious function allows drivers to effortlessly change the vehicle’s orientation within confined spaces with minimal effort.

Moreover, the e-Corner System’s “diagonal driving” was demonstrated, a maneuver that rotates all wheels at a 45-degree angle in unison, deftly sidestepping obstructions or other automobiles on the road.

Lastly, the “pivot turn” feature empowers drivers to select a specific point as the central axis for rotating the vehicle, akin to tracing a circle using a compass.

Hyundai Mobis declared that the e-Corner System’s triumphant display on real-world streets paves the way for enhancements in dependability. The company envisions this technology as “an indispensable mobility solution for electrification and autonomous driving.”

While this cutting-edge innovation has yet to be mass-produced globally, Hyundai Mobis hinted at the possibility of incorporating the e-Corner System into future Hyundai Motor Group vehicles.
