Hand Built One Off Rolls Royce Phantom Syntopia Is A Fashion Inspired Masterpiece

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has recently introduced a new vehicle called the Phantom Syntopia, which was crafted in partnership with Dutch designer and Haute Couturière Iris van Herpen. The Phantom Syntopia is based on the Phantom Extended, which is known for its exceptional personalization possibilities, making it the most complicated commission ever undertaken by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective. After four years of continuous development, this unique vehicle is now complete and is about to be added to the private collections of brand loyalists.

Phantom Syntopia was inspired by Iris van Herpen’s landmark 2018 collection that utilized biomimicry principles where art is inspired by nature’s patterns and shapes. The car’s “Weaving Water” theme represents the evasive and ethereal beauty of fluid motion in solid materials. To create a stunning exterior, the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective has developed a custom paint called Liquid Noir, which changes colors when viewed from different angles, exhibiting purple, blue, magenta, and gold undertones in sunlight. The team spent several months perfecting the effect, including over 3,000 hours of testing and validation alone.

The vehicle’s interior suite features unique features that were created by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective and Iris van Herpen, who collaborated to produce an outcome that is both creative and technical. Some of the elements were handcrafted at the Home of Rolls-Royce by the company’s leading craftspeople, while others were designed in Iris van Herpen’s Amsterdam atelier, alongside her Haute Couture garments.

The most technically challenging version of Rolls-Royce’s signature feature, the Weaving Water Starlight Headliner, is installed in Phantom Syntopia. It was created using a single sheet of flawless leather, with silver “liquid metal” texture made from woven nylon fabric underneath, giving it a three-dimensional appearance. The Headliner is finished with 162 delicate glass organza petals, which were applied by members of Iris van Herpen’s Couture team, who travelled to Goodwood to undertake the work, taking almost 300 hours. In addition, 187 of the 995 sparkling fiberoptic ‘stars’ were individually placed by hand alongside the artwork, illuminating sequentially, creating a feeling of movement.

The Weaving Water theme is also present in the Gallery artwork, which runs the width of the Phantom’s fascia. The highly expressive work includes a further 85 petals, which were also attached by hand by Iris van Herpen’s team at Goodwood, representing almost 60 hours of work. The picnic tables and the passenger panel below the Gallery have the Weaving Water artwork motif. The motif was achieved by combining multiple coats of paint and lacquer containing different quantities of glass particles.

Phantom Syntopia’s front seats are finished in Magic Grey leather, while the rear seats are upholstered with a silk-blend fabric. The seats are quilted with the Weaving Water motif, inspired by a tufting technique often employed in fine furniture-making.

In summary, Rolls-Royce’s latest creation, Phantom Syntopia, is a unique and exceptional vehicle that combines creativity and technicality. With its custom exterior paint and highly expressive interior, it showcases the brand’s dedication to bespoke luxury and individualization.
