Electric Power Meets Off Road Performance – 2024 Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 Review

The Hummer EV SUV has finally arrived, following in the footsteps of its pickup counterpart, which debuted in 2023. This new electric SUV boasts a shorter wheelbase and a distinct body style that sets it apart from the pickup. The first Hummer EV SUVs are slated to hit GMC dealerships in the early part of the same year.

For those who have been waiting patiently to receive their orders, the good news is that production has already begun. However, for those who haven’t yet placed their orders, the EV2X is the recommended model to purchase, as it offers features that are superior to those of the base model.

Similar to its pickup cousin, the Hummer EV SUV will be powered by two or three electric motors, as hinted at by the superscripts in their model names. The EV2 and EV2X models feature a dual-motor setup that can generate an estimated 625 horsepower and an astounding 7400 pound-feet of torque, according to GM’s claims. Meanwhile, the EV3X and Edition 1 models feature a trio of motors, one in front and two in the back, producing a claimed 830 horsepower and an impressive 11,500 pound-feet of torque. However, as we have previously explained, these claims of torque may be misleading, and the actual maximum torque ratings will likely fall between 1000 and 1100 pound-feet. With such power, the Hummer EV SUV is expected to reach 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, a feat that is remarkable considering its size and weight.

Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate that the Hummer EV SUV inherits many of the same off-road features as the truck, such as four-wheel steering with CrabWalk, and an adjustable air suspension with Extract mode, which can raise the vehicle by 6 inches. The SUV version also includes a full-size spare tire mounted on the rear gate, which is sure to please off-roaders. Furthermore, an optional Extreme Off-Road package is available, which includes specialized hardware, such as 18-inch wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires, underbody protection, low-mounted cameras to improve visibility, enhanced axles with heavy-duty components, a locking front differential, and rear motors that can electronically mimic a locked differential.

The base EV2 model comes with a standard 400-volt electrical system, but it can be upgraded to the 800-volt system that comes standard on all other trims. GM has already indicated that the Hummer EV will feature a large battery pack, but its official size and usable capacity have yet to be announced. Nonetheless, with fast charging speeds of up to 300 kW, the Hummer EV SUV is expected to have a driving range of at least 250 miles per charge.

The EPA has not yet provided fuel economy estimates for the Hummer EV SUV, but it is anticipated to be comparable to those of the Hummer EV SUT pickup truck, which are 51 MPGe in the city, 43 MPGe on the highway, and 47 MPGe combined.

The interior of the Hummer EV SUV is a blend of ruggedness and sci-fi aesthetics. Its dashboard boasts a three-dimensional design with both vertical and horizontal air vents, as well as two large displays, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The Hummer is equipped with many physical switchgear and hard buttons to prevent frustrating users for the sake of appearances, such as a rotary drive-mode selector and a thick T-shaped shifter on the center console. The top-of-the-line Edition 1 model features high-end materials with leather-stitched surfaces and striking bronze accents. However, lower down on the dash and door panels are cheap plastic panels that seem out of place in such an expensive vehicle.
