China’s electric vehicle (EV) market is about to witness a remarkable surge in popularity, thanks to an extraordinary compact hatchback that offers an impressive CLTC range of up to 251 miles. This exceptional vehicle, known as the BYD Seagull subcompact EV, was recently unveiled and made available for pre-sales at the prestigious Auto Shanghai 2023.

The response to the Seagull has been overwhelming, with an astounding 10,000 pre-orders flooding in within a mere day of its global premiere during the auto show press briefing. It’s part of BYD’s Ocean series, which also includes the Dolphin compact hatchback and the Seal mid-size sedan, and is considered the most affordable EV the brand has produced thus far. With a price tag of only $11,400 (78,800 yuan) in China, its affordability undoubtedly played a significant role in the incredible number of orders received in such a short period.

Underneath its stylish exterior, the Seagull utilizes BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, which it shares with its Ocean series counterparts, the Dolphin and Seal. Propelled by a front-positioned electric motor with a capacity of 55 kilowatts (74 horsepower), the Seagull offers buyers a choice between two BYD Blade LFP battery packs. The first option is a 30-kWh pack that provides a range of 190 miles (305 kilometers) according to CLTC standards, while the second option is a 38-kWh battery that extends the range to an impressive 251 miles (405 km).

Notably, both battery options come equipped with DC fast-charging capabilities, allowing the BYD Seagull to charge up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes. This means that users can spend less time waiting around for their vehicle to charge and enjoy more time on the road.

The Seagull’s design is sleek and contemporary, drawing inspiration from the Dolphin but adding a bold twist. It features a five-door configuration and comfortably accommodates four passengers. Eye-catching LED headlights, a spacious windshield with a single wiper, a distinctive “floating roof” design, a rear LED light bar reminiscent of the BYD D1 minivan, and an athletic roof spoiler are among its notable exterior features.

Inside the cabin, drivers are treated to a 5-inch instrument cluster and a sizable 12.8-inch infotainment display. A sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and a pair of cup holders add a touch of convenience and style to the interior.

Automotive analysts have expressed their optimism about the Seagull’s potential, stating that it could achieve the status of China’s best-selling EV within just six months of its debut. Given the size and significance of China’s EV market, such a feat would position the BYD Seagull as the world’s best-selling electric vehicle—an extraordinary accomplishment for this affordable and high-performing hatchback.
