All Electric Volkswagen ID.7 Walkaround

Volkswagen is continuously expanding its technological prowess with the unveiling of the new ID.7. A first of its kind electric model in the upper mid-size sedan class, this impressive vehicle boasts an estimated potential range of up to 435 miles / 700 km (based on the European WLTP cycle), a revamped powertrain, spacious interior, and premium technologies that make it perfect for long-distance travel. The launch of the ID.7 in 2021 in Europe and China, and in North America by 2024, opens up a new segment for Volkswagen’s EV family, with an enhanced customer-focused operating concept and an impeccable appearance.

According to Kai Grünitz, a member of the Brand Board of Management responsible for development, “The ID.7 sets new efficiency standards on the basis of the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). We are aiming for a range of up to 700 kilometres2 on the WLTP standard. This is made possible by very good aerodynamics and by significantly increased efficiency in the areas of the powertrain and thermal management.”

The ID.7 is equipped with a brand-new, highly efficient drivetrain that features the most powerful and highest-torque electric motor in a Volkswagen EV model so far, with 282 horsepower (210 kW). Regardless of the battery size, this power variant is used in the ID.7. The APP550 power unit, which was created in Kassel (Germany) in collaboration with Volkswagen Group Components and is manufactured there, contributes to the vehicle’s remarkable energy efficiency. Volkswagen anticipates that, depending on the battery size and trim, WLTP ranges of up to 435 miles (700 km) and DC fast charging capacities of up to about 200 kW will be achievable. Although the EPA-estimated range is not yet available, Volkswagen assures us that it will be revealed closer to the North American launch date.

The ID.7’s aerodynamic design, which measures 195.3 inches in length, contributes to its excellent drag coefficient of 0.23, depending on the equipment. The roof slopes elegantly to the rear, like a coupe, and combined with the long wheelbase and short overhangs, it creates an incredibly spacious interior for all occupants.

Volkswagen has introduced a new operating and display concept with the ID.7, responding to feedback from its customers and improving the operating experience. The new features included as standard are a 15-inch infotainment system screen, an augmented reality head-up display, a new air conditioning operating concept integrated into the infotainment system, and backlit touch sliders.

Imelda Labbé, a member of the Brand Board of Management for Sales, Marketing, and Aftersales, states, “The ID.7 is an extremely important model for the Volkswagen brand in Europe, North America, and China. The ID.7 offers an attractive package that will excite both existing and new Volkswagen customers all over the world. With this Volkswagen, we are offering premium technologies that impress through their exclusivity, comfort, and high degree of everyday usability.”

Volkswagen’s accelerated electric offensive, which includes the launch of ten new electric models by 2026, features the new ID.7 as a centerpiece. This year alone, Volkswagen is introducing the facelifted ID.3, the long-wheelbase ID. Buzz, and the ID.7. In 2026, Volkswagen plans to launch a compact electric SUV and the production version of the sub-€25,000 ID. 2all. Volkswagen anticipates that this will give it the widest range of electric vehicles compared with its competitors.
