New Honda Civic Type R GT Concept Unveiled as Preview of Upcoming Super GT Race Car

Honda is unveiling a new concept car at the Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan, previewing a new model for the Super GT series. The concept car, called the Civic Type R-GT, has been developed based on the current road-going Civic Type R and is set to replace the NSX-GT Type S. The prototype features Honda Racing Corporation’s signature colors of red, blue, and white, and was unveiled by HRC president Koji Watanabe.

While the concept car bears a resemblance to the road-legal version, there are significant differences between the two. The race car is driven by the rear wheels, unlike the front-wheel-drive layout of the Civic Type R. Honda has not released detailed information about the mechanics of the car, but has stated that the concept car shows the direction in which the final version of the race car will evolve during development.

It is not yet known at what stage the development process is, but Honda has announced that the first track tests are scheduled for this summer. The final version of the race car is expected to be ready for the 2024 season of the Super GT series, when new regulations in the GT500 segment will be introduced. Honda is anticipated to be the only manufacturer with a brand new contender in the series, as Nissan and Toyota are likely to continue with modified versions of their current race cars, the Nissan Z and Toyota Supra, respectively.

The Super GT series, which represents the top level of car racing in Japan, was established in 1993 and renamed in 2005. The series currently has two classes, GT300 and GT500. Last year, Nissan won the crown in both classes, and Honda’s last title was in 2020 with the front-engined NSX-GT. The 2023 season of Super GT begins on April 15th at the Okayama International Circuit, with eight races planned for this year. However, Honda’s new Civic Type-R-based contender will not be introduced until 2024.
