621 HP Maserati GT2 Revealed As MC20 Race Car With Air Conditioning

Undoubtedly one of the most aesthetically pleasing race cars to grace our presence in recent memory, the Maserati GT2 is poised to make its inaugural appearance this weekend at the renowned 24 Hours of Spa event in Belgium. This new single-seater racer, as the name suggests, has been meticulously developed to adhere to GT2 regulations and draws substantial inspiration from the remarkable MC20 supercar that graces the streets. Its anticipated debut on the track will serve as a precursor to its inaugural full season in 2024, following its participation in the final rounds of the esteemed Fanatec GT European Series.

Similar to its street-legal counterpart, the GT2 harnesses the might of Maserati’s in-house Nettuno V6 engine, as the famed trident-logoed company will cease to receive Ferrari engines once their existing agreement expires at year-end. Within the context of this thrilling racing application, the Modena-crafted 3.0-liter, twin-turbo powerhouse generates an impressive output of 621 horsepower (463 kilowatts) at 7,500 revolutions per minute, accompanied by a peak torque of 730 Newton-meters (538 pound-feet) attainable from 3,000 RPM. These performance figures may sound familiar, as they mirror those offered by the MC20.

While the road-going variant of the GT2 relies on an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission, its racing-oriented sibling boasts a six-speed sequential gearbox that features paddle shifters and a motorsport-grade clutch. Maserati has also incorporated a limited-slip mechanical self-locking differential, tailor-made for competitive racing purposes. Additionally, the GT2 is equipped with forged 18-inch center-lock wheels and two-way adjustable dampers on both the front and rear axles. Distinguishing itself from the MC20, the GT2 positions its two exhaust outlets higher up and boasts an all-new race exhaust system.

Although the GT2 proudly showcases a composite body that pays homage to its road-going counterpart, numerous modifications have been implemented to optimize aerodynamics and enhance cooling capabilities. Most notably, at the rear of the vehicle, a substantial wing has been affixed, accompanied by an aggressive diffuser and a roof scoop. The front bumper of the GT2 exhibits canards as part of its extreme aerodynamic package, which also incorporates a prominent splitter and a freshly redesigned hood featuring additional ventilation outlets.

Remarkably, despite its status as a bona fide GT2-compliant race car, the GT2 does not compromise on comfort, as it is furnished with air conditioning. For an additional fee, customers can opt to include a passenger seat, a rearview camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Furthermore, the GT2 offers the choice of an optional Blu Infinito paint finish and livery, exclusively reserved for racing variants. Notably, the fire extinguisher and the 6.5-inch screen come as standard equipment, along with an adjustable steering column and pedal box.

It is worth mentioning that the GT2 is not the sole MC20-based track-exclusive machine in Maserati’s lineup, as the esteemed Stellantis brand is diligently working on the development of the Project24. Restricted to a mere 62 units, each of which will be truly unique, this uncompromising derivative promises an astounding 740 horsepower.
