2024 Volvo EM90 Minivan Exterior Revealed

Each car sold in China must receive approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Before these vehicles hit the market, the Ministry shares pictures of them on their website as part of the approval process. Sometimes, these images are made public several weeks before the car’s official debut. The EM90, Volvo’s first-ever minivan, is one such example, and we can see its exterior in a few pictures.

It’s pretty clear that the electric minivan looks a lot like the Zeekr 009, as the pillars, side mirrors, door handles, and fender-mounted cameras all appear identical. However, the EM90 has a different front design with new headlights to match other Volvo models. Instead of the flashy grille on the Zeekr, it features a body-colored panel with small cutouts that likely illuminate.

The back of the EM90 has also been changed to fit Volvo’s style, but you can still see it’s the same minivan by the shape of the tailgate and the placement of the camera below the license plate. The EM90 might not be as attention-grabbing as the 009, which some may prefer, but everyone has their own taste. This minivan is a significant departure for Volvo, as it’s their first step into the minivan world, having previously focused on SUVs, sedans, and wagons.

Let’s talk numbers for a moment. According to the info on the MIIT website, the 2024 Volvo EM90 is 205 inches long, 79.6 inches wide, and 73.1 inches tall. You’ll be able to get it with either 19- or 20-inch wheels, and it’s designed to carry six people. It’s a hefty vehicle, weighing in at 6,091 pounds.

The wheelbase, which is the distance between the front and rear axles, matches that of the Zeekr 009, measuring 126 inches. Geely’s premium brand, founded in 2021, also offers a fancier 2+2 seating layout, but we’ll have to wait to see if Volvo follows suit. It’s possible since the Buick GL8 and Lexus LM can also be configured with just two rear seats.

Now, onto the powertrain. While the EM90 has a rear-mounted electric motor with 200 kilowatts (equal to 268 horsepower) according to the MIIT website, it’s worth noting that the Zeekr 009 offers a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup with a more potent 536 horsepower. This makes the 009 quite quick, going from 0 to 62 mph in only four and a half seconds.

Although the battery specs aren’t mentioned for the EM90, the Zeekr 009 packs a lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt battery from CATL. This substantial 140-kWh battery provides an impressive 511 miles of range, as per the local China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. There’s also a smaller 116-kWh battery option that offers 436 miles of range.

The EM90 is set to be officially unveiled on November 12, and preorders will begin in China, where it’s being promoted as a “Scandinavian living room on the move.” This minivan will be manufactured there.
