The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R eHybrid 4Motion is a high-performance plug-in hybrid SUV, distinguished as the apex of Volkswagen’s revised Touareg range. It combines a 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine with a 100kW electric motor, delivering a combined output of 462hp. This power system remains unchanged from the previous model, including the 17.9kWh battery pack offering a usable capacity of 14.1kWh. The vehicle’s electric driving range is around 48km, with CO2 emissions rated at 51g/km.
Externally, the Touareg R eHybrid features a new grille and headlight arrangement, full-width illumination strips, and a light-up VW boot badge. It sports gloss black exterior accents, blue brake callipers with the ‘R’ emblem, and dark-red rear light clusters. The SUV comes standard with 20-inch wheels, with an option for up to 22-inch wheels. Notably, it offers a color exclusive to this model in the Touareg line-up – Lapiz Blue.
Inside, the Touareg R eHybrid boasts Puglia leather trim with contrast blue stitching and piping, brushed dark aluminum dash inserts, quilted leather on the door cards, and ‘ergoComfort’ active climate-controlled sports seats with 14-way adjustment. Other features include brushed stainless steel pedals and strategic placements of ‘R’ logos.
Despite its impressive specifications and features, the Touareg R eHybrid presents as a vehicle of mixed identity. It doesn’t quite excel as a high-performance SUV or as an ecologically sound plug-in hybrid. It’s not particularly exciting or fast to drive, and its eco-stats don’t outperform some competitors in the PHEV market. However, it does provide excellent ride comfort and rolling refinement, thanks to its air suspension system.
As for technical specifics, the vehicle maintains a kerb weight of 2,533 kg and can tow a maximum of 3,500 kg. The luggage compartment capacity ranges from 665 to 1675 liters. It achieves a top speed of 250 km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds.
The starting price for this model is €104,775, making it an affordable entry into Volkswagen’s premium SUV segment. It promises a low fuel consumption rate of 2.3 liters per 100 km when regularly plugged in and a yearly road tax bill of just €150 due to its low CO2 output.
