2024 Volkswagen Passat Revealed In Europe

Volkswagen’s iconic Passat bids adieu to the United States after the 2022 model, but it forges ahead in Europe with its enhanced MQB underpinnings, marking the introduction of the ninth generation. This enduring nameplate, only eclipsed by the Golf, has seen over 30 million units delivered since its 1973 inception. The new B9 version arrives solely as a wagon, leaving the sedan behind.

Revamped with the MQB Evo platform shared with the next-gen Tiguan and Golf Mk8, the 2024 Passat Variant emerges significantly larger than its predecessor, stretching to 193.5 inches in length, with a commendable increase of 5.7 inches. Its width expands by 0.8 inches, reaching 72.9 inches, while height maintains at 59.2 inches. The wheelbase extends by 1.97 inches to 111.8 inches.

Visual evolution meets modernity as the new Passat aligns its design with VW’s electric ID models. Trim variations—Passat, Business, Elegance, and R-Line—bring diverse exterior aesthetics, with wheels up to 19 inches in size. The interior takes a leap with minimal switchgear, relying heavily on a 12.9-inch touchscreen, expandable to 15 inches. A digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster replaces analog dials, and a relocated gear selector frees space for cargo. Enhanced comfort arrives via 14-way adjustable, heated, ventilated, and massaging seats.

Notable growth extends to both legroom and cargo capacity, boasting 1.41 cubic feet more storage, reaching 24.3 cubic feet with rear seats up, expanding to an impressive 67.8 cubic feet when folded.

Powertrain options showcase diversity, including a 1.5-liter mild-hybrid gasoline engine with 148 hp, a 2.0 TSI offering 201 hp (or 261 hp with AWD), and a trio of 2.0 TDI diesel choices. Plug-in hybrids, branded as “eHybrid,” span 201 hp with 258 lb-ft of torque and a more potent variant generating 268 hp and 295 lb-ft. These PHEVs come with a 19.7-kWh battery for an electric range of about 62 miles.

Rapid DC fast-charging capabilities, delivering 10-80% battery charge in around 25 minutes, bolster the Passat’s appeal. With a full tank and charged battery, an impressive 621-mile driving range becomes feasible.

Marking its debut at IAA Munich, the 2024 Passat hits the market in Q1 2024. As production shifts to Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Skoda Superb, the Passat’s legacy evolves, leaving its mark as a symbol of innovation and adaptability.
