2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS in Racing Yellow

Porsche’s much-anticipated GT4 RS equivalent has been a topic of speculation for quite some time. But now, the automaker has officially confirmed its existence, and we couldn’t be more excited. The Spyder RS boasts some notable distinctions from its counterpart, but one thing remains unchanged – the powertrains. The heart of this beast lies in its impressive 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine, which can rev up to an astounding 9000 rpm. Brace yourselves for the mind-blowing output of 493 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque – that’s 79 horsepower more than the already potent 718 Spyder!

Like other modern Porsches donning the distinguished RS badge, the Spyder RS will only be offered with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK automatic transmission. To enhance acceleration, the gear ratios have been tweaked – a strategy similar to that of the Cayman. According to Porsche’s official figures, the new RS is projected to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, matching the Cayman’s performance on paper. However, we suspect the actual time might be closer to the 2.8-second mark, as we observed during our testing of the GT4 RS last spring.

Let’s talk about the chassis. The Spyder RS takes inspiration from both the Cayman GT4 RS and the 718 Spyder. Equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management and featuring sport calibration, it has a reduced ride height of 1.2 inches. Notable additions include a mechanical limited-slip differential at the rear, ball-jointed suspension mountings, and 20-inch center locking forged alloy wheels. The spring and damper rates have been adjusted to create a more relaxed and convertible-style setup, as Porsche describes it.

Now, the front end of the new RS resembles that of the GT4 RS, but with a slightly shorter carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic splitter since there’s no rear wing. Instead, an enlarged and reshaped ducktail spoiler adds to the car’s stability and aerodynamic performance by generating downforce at the rear.

For those seeking even more weight savings, Porsche offers the optional Weissach package. This package includes carbon-fiber replacements for various components, such as the front hood, door mirror caps, upper and lower side air intakes, and the Gurney flap on the duckbill. Additionally, a titanium exhaust system inspired by the limited-edition 935 released in 2018 is part of the Weissach package.

As expected from an RS model, Porsche has made weight reduction a priority. The implementation of fabric door straps instead of traditional interior handles is just one example. And for drivers who love the open-top experience, they can manually lower the soft top when the weather allows. However, if the weather turns sour, drivers will have to exit the vehicle to secure the top back in place. On the bright side, the soft top itself is quite light, weighing just over 40 pounds, contributing to an overall weight reduction of 16 pounds.

Mark your calendars, folks! The new Spyder RS is set to arrive at dealerships in the spring of 2024, with a starting price of $162,150. Before that, Porsche plans to unveil the car at a celebratory event in June, followed by its appearance at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s worth noting that the price tag is approximately $20,000 higher than the Cayman GT4 RS equivalent. But Porsche’s allure and desirability are so strong that they can entice customers to pay more for less. Now that’s the magic of the Spyder RS!
