2024 Mercedes Maybach GLS First Look Review

The world of high-end SUVs has seen an influx of incredibly luxurious and fast vehicles with price tags that could make even the most well-heeled among us blush. One such vehicle is the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, which offers a perfect combination of opulence and performance. With a starting price of over $175k in the USA, the Maybach GLS is not for the faint of heart. However, for those who enjoy the finer things in life, it’s a must-see.

The 2024 Maybach GLS is a truly remarkable vehicle that promises to take the world by storm. Mercedes has not yet announced a specific release date, but we can expect it to hit local dealerships later this year. This latest iteration of the GLS-Class lineup features a bit of a facelift, with an updated front bumper that integrates the air intakes separately from the grille. The Maybach grille, with its slim vertical bars, is underscored by chrome surrounds and Maybach pattern on the air intakes.

The Maybach GLS maintains its signature features, such as the full panorama roof and soft-close doors, as standard. However, buyers can now opt for 23-inch forged wheels, which complement the brightware on the exterior and come with forged wheel bolt covers. Additionally, there are two new exterior colors available: Twilight Blue and Manufaktur Alpine Grey, one metallic and the other non-metallic. The GLS 600 also retains its iconic two-tone look.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS of the new model year is intended to offer a soothing and indulgent experience for its occupants. The previous iteration of this vehicle was so successful at achieving this that very little has changed with regard to the cabin. Nevertheless, the standard interior lighting is now accompanied by animated Maybach-patterned projections, which impart an even greater sense of exclusivity. Moreover, the new seat upholstery design reinforces the notion of expressive luxury, with its elegant diamond quilting and unique perforations that adorn the seat centers and backrests.

Given that the previous model was already replete with a plethora of luxury features, creature comforts, and cutting-edge technology, the 2024 Maybach GLS has undergone only minor alterations. The interior colors have been retained, and the car still comes equipped with such amenities as heated and ventilated power front seats with massage, a four-zone Executive Climate Control system, dual 12.3-inch displays for infotainment and driver’s information, a high-end Burmester surround sound system, a head-up display, and a comprehensive suite of driver assists.

Notably, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS rear seats embody the essence of this vehicle. While the standard GLS-Class configuration includes three rows of seating, the Maybach GLS has only two. Two reclining seats are standard, but if desired, a bench can be specified. However, we believe this would detract from the car’s purpose. With the rear-seat entertainment system installed, one enters the realm of ultra-luxury.

For those who are interested, the Maybach GLS’ cargo capacity should be the same as the 2023 model, which amounts to 18.4 cubic feet behind the second row. The presence of heated and cooled cupholders throughout the cabin serves to enhance the convenience of one’s life, while a full-length center console in the rear provides ample storage space for all the miscellaneous items one may need to store.

The Maybach GLS is not a lightweight vehicle, with the current GLS 600 tipping the scales at over 6,000 pounds. While updates to the regular GLS-Class lineup included some tweaks to the powertrain, the Maybach GLS retains the same engine specs. It uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that generates 550 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Despite no changes to the powertrain, Mercedes claims that the Maybach GLS 600’s 0-60 mph time has decreased by one-tenth of a second, requiring only 4.7 seconds to cross the finish line. This is in line with the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 4Matic’s sprint time, with the higher outputs offsetting the heavier curb weight.

The GLS 600 maintains its top speed of 155 mph and can tow up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped. The mild hybrid system also adds a temporary boost and smoothly integrates the stop/start function in traffic. The electric motor torque-fills gaps in the powerband, ensuring smooth and effortless acceleration and cruising.

In conclusion, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS is a truly breathtaking vehicle that combines luxury and performance in a way that few others can match. While it carries a hefty price tag, it’s undoubtedly worth it for those who appreciate the finer things in life. With its updated exterior, luxurious features, and powerful engine, the Maybach GLS is sure to turn heads wherever it goes.
