Mazda has recently introduced the 2024 Mazda2 Hybrid in Europe, sporting fresh looks and a brand-new color option called Glass Blue. However, the major highlight is the simplified setup process, featuring revamped trim levels: Prime, Centre, Exclusive, Homura, and Homura Plus.
Derived from the Toyota Yaris, the latest Mazda2 Hybrid distinguishes itself with its updated styling, boasting a redesigned bumper and grill, lending it a more pronounced Mazda-esque appearance. This aesthetic transformation carries over to the back, where body-colored liftgate trim adds a sporty and dynamic touch.
Beneath the revamped exterior, Mazda employs its smart hybrid technology, smoothly transitioning between electric and gasoline power or a fusion of both. The 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine independently delivers 91 horsepower or up to 114 hp when combined with the 59-kW electric motor. In terms of performance, it can reach 0 to 62 miles per hour (100 km/h) in a reasonable 9.7 seconds, with a top speed of 109 mph (175 km/h).
However, what piques the interest of most hybrid enthusiasts is fuel efficiency. In this department, the Mazda2 Hybrid boasts an impressive figure, achieving up to 61.9 miles per gallon (3.8 liters/100 km) in the WLTP combined cycle, depending on wheel size and trim level.
Starting with the entry-level Prime, it includes standard features like keyless entry, a USB-C connection, and smartphone compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Progressing to the Centre trim introduces enhanced speakers, while the Exclusive model offers auto-folding side mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, and front and rear parking sensors for added convenience in blind-spot monitoring and parking.
The Homura grade builds upon the Exclusive line, integrating LED lighting, 17-inch alloy wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Finally, the top-tier Homura Plus replaces the standard nine-inch multimedia display with a more expansive 10.5-inch version and introduces a panoramic glass sunroof.
The Mazda2 Hybrid plays a pivotal role in Mazda’s lineup as its B-segment offering and is integral to the automaker’s multi-pronged approach to reducing emissions. It complements a global lineup that includes the Mazda3 and a range of crossovers such as the CX-30 and CX-5, which are available in the US. Looking ahead to 2030, Mazda is charting a course towards offering a comprehensive array of electric vehicles and is rekindling its iconic rotary engine for the MX-30 plug-in hybrid.
