2024 Lexus GX550 Takes Aim At Land Rover Defender

The Lexus GX has always stood out among the vehicles in the brand lineup, as it possesses genuine off-road capabilities, setting it apart from its Toyota luxury counterparts. However, with its initial launch dating back to 2009, the GX is starting to show its age. But fear not, as an all-new GX550 is on the horizon, scheduled to debut in early 2024. This upcoming model brings with it a fresh and distinct look, reminiscent of the Land Cruisers of the past, while also aiming to rival the four-door Land Rover Defenders.

In line with the Land Cruiser Prado, the first two generations of the GX sported a softer, more rounded appearance compared to the classic Land Cruisers from the early 1990s and prior. Those earlier models boasted a boxier and more rugged aesthetic. With the increasing popularity of robust and capable SUVs, especially in the premium segment, the new GX pays homage to those earlier Land Cruisers. Though it features sharp-edged headlamps and a spindle grille, remove those design elements, and it would fit right into an off-road setting.

This revamped GX presents a more vertical stance, with the A-pillars pushed back, a flatter windshield, and a taller greenhouse, exuding an aura of readiness for adventure. To improve visibility while navigating challenging trails, the designers have kept the beltline relatively lower until reaching the rear doors.

The GX shares the GA-F platform with the latest LX, and it is expected to share it with the next generation of the Prado upon its release. The new GX boasts a longer wheelbase, measuring 112.2 inches, which is 2.4 inches more than its predecessor. The length has been stretched by 2.75 inches, while the width has increased by at least 3.74 inches. Additionally, the front overhang has been reduced by 0.78 inch, resulting in an improved approach angle. These changes contribute to a more rugged appearance, suggesting the GX is ready to take on challenges alongside Defenders, Wranglers, and Broncos.

As expected, the GX comes with full-time four-wheel drive, and its center differential features a Torsen limited slip unit with a locking clutch. The new Overtrail trim level adds an electronic locking rear differential, and a two-speed transfer case is, of course, included.

Powering the GX is a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. With an impressive output of 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, the V6 surpasses the performance of the previous GX’s 4.6-liter V8 by 48 horsepower. Additionally, the maximum towing capacity has been increased to 8,000 pounds. In the future, Lexus plans to introduce a hybrid system to the GX, likely based on the i-Force Max found in the Tundra and Sequoia models.

Inside the vehicle, the GX has undergone a significant upgrade compared to its predecessor. The older GX featured a relatively small infotainment screen with outdated software. However, the new model adopts a fresh appearance, distinct from other Lexus vehicles. The layout is more vertical, showcasing a 14-inch touchscreen and the latest-generation Lexus infotainment system, a substantial improvement over its predecessor. Android Auto and iPhone projection are available wirelessly, and the gauges are presented on a 12.3-inch digital cluster. Furthermore, an optional heads-up display might prove useful when navigating through challenging trails.

Similar to its predecessor, the new GX offers three rows of seats, although the third row may not provide as much space as larger SUVs like the LX. The second-row can be configured with either a bench or two captains chairs, providing flexibility to accommodate different seating preferences.

New for the 2024 GX are the Overtrail and Overtrail+ trim levels. These variants feature a two-tone paint scheme in various combinations, such as Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, or Earth/Black Roof. The Overtrail GX also comes equipped with 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, aluminum skid plates, and black fenders. Multiple drive modes, including downhill assist control and crawl control, are available.

All 2024 GX models come standard with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which includes essential safety features like Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA). The new GX550 is set to go on sale in early 2024, offering a compelling option for those seeking a capable and stylish luxury SUV.
