Incredibly, the unveiling of the Alfa Romeo Tonale occurred more than a year ago. For our European compatriots, this may not come as a surprise as they have already seen Tonales traversing their picturesque landscape. However, in the US, we eagerly anticipate our first encounter with this sleek compact crossover. Thankfully, with North American production commencing, our patience will soon be rewarded.

Originating from Alfa Romeo’s Naples-based facility in Italy, the Tonale represents the car manufacturer’s initial foray into the realm of plug-in hybrids. While also offered with a conventional 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the North American market will exclusively receive the PHEV variant. To jog your memory, the innovative powertrain comprises a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a singular electric motor, culminating in an impressive 285 combined horsepower. Power is distributed to all four wheels, with the electric motor responsible for the rear and the engine attending to the front. A six-speed automatic transmission takes care of gear shifting, while a 15.5-kWh battery enables over 30 miles of emission-free travel.

For those American buyers uninterested in hybrid technology, there is an alternative, albeit one devoid of the Alfa Romeo emblem. The Dodge Hornet, a slightly modified Tonale, is available with the 2.0-liter turbo engine. Though it generates slightly less power at 265 hp, it can still achieve 60 mph in approximately 6.5 seconds, aided by a nine-speed automatic transmission. Dodge has enthusiastically marketed this iteration of the Hornet as a budget-friendly speedster, with a starting price below $30,000.

This has purportedly irked Alfa Romeo’s top brass, as the entry-level Tonale in Sprint trim starts at a heftier $44,950 (including destination fee). It is worth noting, however, that this price encompasses the hybrid powertrain with increased power and all-wheel drive, as the Tonale is positioned as a premium compact crossover.

Anticipate the arrival of the Tonale at dealerships during the second quarter of 2023.
