The choice of Mirage’s car-form holds significance not only because the story is set in 1994 but also due to the character traits attributed to Mirage. Oliver Hoffmann, the Head of Marketing Communications at Porsche AG, explains, “The 911 Carrera RS 3.8 is a perfect fit for ‘Mirage’ because it reflects his tough nature, good-heartedness, and occasional rebellious streak.”
The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 holds a special place in automotive history, with only 55 units ever built, making it an exceptionally rare gem. To ensure the preservation of these valuable vehicles, no original models were used during filming. Instead, five identical replica cars were meticulously crafted to resemble the 964 model externally. However, to maintain authenticity and replicate the engine sound accurately, a real 911 RS 3.8 was utilized in capturing Mirage’s scenes. Ayesha Coker, Vice President of Marketing at Porsche Cars North America, expresses the ambition behind this endeavor, stating, “It was crucial for us to showcase the genuine sound of the 911 model depicted in the film. Despite the challenges posed by sourcing limited production 911s, we are delighted with the outcome and hope that audiences will be too.”
Each of the replica cars serves a distinct purpose within the movie. One vehicle has been specially modified to achieve high speeds while moving in reverse, another is dedicated to executing breathtaking stunts, and an additional car is controlled externally to emphasize the character inside.
