2023 Volkswagen ID.3 FACELIFT Production in Germany

In a development that heralds the next phase of Volkswagen’s ID family of Electric Vehicles, the German automaker has revealed the refreshed iteration of its ID.3 model, a mere two and a half years after its initial introduction. Volkswagen is making audacious assertions about the extensive nature of the update, despite the absence of significant alterations to the car’s interior and exterior aesthetics.

While there are some subtle adjustments to the vehicle’s appearance, the primary focus of the upgrade lies in the latest software, which integrates new convenience and assistance systems. Volkswagen contends that these changes are substantial enough to classify the ID.3 as a second-generation vehicle.

From a visual standpoint, the most prominent external modification in the revamped ID.3 is the redesigned front bumper, featuring enlarged air cooling openings that bestow a more assertive demeanor upon the vehicle. The LED headlights and taillight clusters also exhibit new light signatures, with the taillight segments in the trunk lid now illuminated as well. Other exterior alterations comprise aerodynamically optimized alloy wheels, a black roof with matte-silver accents, and the inclusion of fresh colors such as the Dark Olivine Green iridescent metallic paint. Additionally, the removal of the black strip under the windshield grants the front hood a lengthier appearance, while recessed sections on the sides create the illusion of increased length.

Although the car’s interior remains mostly unaltered, Volkswagen has leveraged customer feedback to enhance the tactile experience by utilizing high-quality materials. Soft, foam-backed surfaces now adorn the cockpit, and the door panels have been redesigned to feature larger, more cushioned areas and more ample hand rests. Moreover, the ID.3 is now completely free from animal-derived components and boasts a substantial proportion of recycled materials, including the Artvelours Eco microfiber material on the door trims and seat covers made from 71 percent recycled plastic waste.

The infotainment system comprises two standalone displays: a compact 5.3-inch driver display and a larger 12-inch touchscreen. The latter controls the navigation system, telephone functions, media, assistance systems, and vehicle settings. Volkswagen has implemented several modifications to the menu structure of the infotainment system, including a more lucid and informative charging menu that now occupies the top level of the primary display.

Under the hood, the refreshed ID.3 retains the same rear-mounted electric drive motor, delivering a power output of 201 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque. The 58-kWh and 77-kWh battery packs, offering the same WLTP range ratings, remain available. The larger battery affords a range of up to 339 miles in the ID.3 Pro S, while the smaller battery provides 264 miles of range in the ID.3 Pro. Volkswagen has indicated plans for a smaller battery in the future, although precise details have not yet been disclosed.

At a DC fast-charging station, the 77-kWh battery in the ID.3 Pro S can charge from 5 to 80 percent within 30 minutes, at a rate of up to 170 kW. The 58-kWh pack in the ID.3 Pro requires 35 minutes to complete the same charging cycle, operating at 120 kW.

Although Volkswagen has not announced a specific launch date for the refreshed ID.3, earlier reports suggest that it will be accessible to European customers in the fourth quarter of 2023. Despite the limited visual changes, the automaker’s bold assertions regarding the comprehensive upgrade and the integration of new software and assistance systems render the facelifted ID.3 an enticing proposition for electric vehicle enthusiasts.
