2023 Mercedes AMG EQE 43 Review

Mercedes-Benz, the renowned automaker, is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG EQE. This new variant of the electric sedan aims to deliver a performance that rivals its larger sibling, the AMG EQS, while packaged in a more compact form.

The AMG EQE53 takes the power output from its dual electric motors to an impressive 617 horsepower and 701 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking even more power, the optional Dynamic Plus package further enhances the total power output to a remarkable 677 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is swift, with claimed 0 to 60 mph times of 3.4 seconds for the standard version and 3.2 seconds with the package. The top speed is limited to either 137 or 149 mph. Transmitting all that torque is a single-speed transmission. It’s worth noting that a lower-powered AMG EQE43 model will be available in Europe but won’t be offered in the United States.

AMG has made notable upgrades to the powertrain and cooling system in the 53 version. The motors used are exclusive to AMG, and power distribution favors the rear, allowing for the potential of playful and sideways driving experiences, should the driver desire. The battery pack remains the same 90.6-kWh unit found in the standard EQE, but due to the increased power, the range is expected to be slightly reduced compared to the less powerful non-AMG model.

To provide enhanced handling, the AMG EQE comes equipped with a standard air suspension that is noticeably stiffer compared to the standard EQE model. For those looking for even more stopping power, carbon-ceramic brakes are available as an option. Considering the substantial weight of this electric sedan, which tips the scales at an impressive two and a half tons, these high-performance brakes may be a wise choice. Unlike the AMG-engineered EQS, which uses identical tires on all four wheels, the AMG EQE models feature a staggered tire setup, with wider tires in the rear. This not only contributes to a more athletic appearance but could also provide the EQE with a slight advantage in cornering capabilities.

Visually, the AMG EQE models share their body panels with the regular EQE lineup. However, unique wheel and tire combinations, along with distinctive AMG accents, grant these models an increased presence on the road. The rear of the vehicle is highlighted by a gurney-style spoiler, adding to its sporty character. As part of the Dynamic Plus package, a “sound experience” feature provides additional artificial sounds, further enhancing the driving experience. The electronic instrument cluster features AMG-specific designs, and a selection of AMG-exclusive seat designs is also available.

When it comes to competition, the AMG EQE will go head-to-head with notable electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 Performance, Tesla Model S, and BMW i4 M50. Additionally, prospective buyers may also consider the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan as alternative options. Mercedes has announced that the AMG EQE will be available in the United States starting early 2023, providing American customers with a thrilling and luxurious electric driving experience.
