2023 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring Review

The 2023 Honda Civic Hatchback is poised to captivate its audience, boasting qualities that make it an all-around favorite among car enthusiasts. With its versatility and confidence, this car truly shines.

Beneath the hood lies a capable 1.5 liter turbo 4-cylinder engine. While its power output of 180 horsepower and 177 pound foot of torque may not astound you, it fulfills its purpose admirably. The petite 1.5 liter engine exhibited impressive performance at sea level, effortlessly overtaking slower traffic on the highway without necessitating a shift out of 6th gear. A slight lean on the turbo and a moment to build boost, and the Civic eagerly closed the gap on its counterparts.

One standout feature that elevates the overall package is the 6-speed manual transmission. Granted, the clutch may feel a tad too light, lacking substantial feedback through the pedal. Additionally, the shifter may have a slightly rubbery feel, although it pales in comparison to other offenders in the market. Nevertheless, having a manual transmission in an economy car is a luxurious offering in today’s automotive landscape. While it may be slightly less efficient than the CVT counterpart (31 Combined mpg compared to 33), the allure of an additional pedal outweighs the fuel economy compromise. Moreover, the inclusion of a manual transmission doesn’t necessitate sacrificing other desirable features.

When it comes to the new Civic’s interior, words fail to do it justice. From the choice of materials to the overall design, the 11th generation 2023 Honda Civic Hatchback leaps ahead of its predecessor in terms of interior quality. Although some cost-cutting measures are still evident in certain areas, the touch points are impeccable. Whether it’s the steering wheel, shifter, or physical climate controls, the components you interact with most frequently provide a delightful tactile experience.

The Civic seamlessly integrates all the expected tech features without overwhelming complexity. Honda Sensing adds welcome safety features like Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. In our Sport Touring trim, we are treated to a more premium 9 inch infotainment system and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

Compared to competitors such as the Mazda 3, Honda’s infotainment system proves more intuitive. Additionally, the Civic allows you to enjoy uninterrupted driving despite the presence of driver assistance features. However, the blind-spot monitoring system can be overly sensitive during traffic maneuvers.

Considering the car’s size, the Civic offers decent space and comfort. The front seats are highly comfortable, although rear passengers, particularly those who stand at 6 feet or taller, may find space limited. Furthermore, rear seat occupants may miss the absence of dedicated climate vents.

As is typical of hatchbacks, the Civic’s trunk is generously spacious and even features a convenient cargo cover that neatly tucks away.

While it certainly impresses, a comparison with other options on the market reveals some interesting insights. Both the Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla hatchbacks offer lower starting prices than the Civic’s $26,545 (including destination). Our well-equipped Sport Touring variant, priced at $31,540, remains affordable compared to most new cars. However, the Mazda 3 2.5 S Premium delivers arguably superior interior quality and remarkably enjoyable driving dynamics, all at a slightly lower price point.
