The E-tron GT, manufactured by Audi, is a remarkable manifestation of the benefits of being a part of a multinational corporation such as the Volkswagen Group. Rather than attempting to force its pre-existing electric vehicle architecture into a sportier package, Audi chose to leverage the technology used by its sister company Porsche for its first-ever all-electric sports car, the Taycan. The result is a vehicle that exemplifies everything that an electric sports sedan is supposed to be: fast, opulent, and a bit obstinate in its adherence to traditional design.
It is widely believed that the E-tron GT is just a rehashed Taycan, and this perception is completely accurate. However, there is nothing wrong with this arrangement. The Taycan is also an outstanding electric sports car that has been created in tandem with the E-tron GT. Both vehicles feature an impressive 800-volt architecture that enables fast charging, as well as dual electric motors (one in the front and one in the rear) that provide between 522 and 637 horsepower depending on the model, and a groundbreaking two-speed transmission that produces awe-inspiring take-offs.
The RS E-tron GT, the top-of-the-line variant, offers 590 horsepower, which increases to 637 horsepower in overboost mode. Although it cannot match the Taycan Turbo S’s remarkable 2.2-second sprint to 60mph, it is still quite impressive given that the E-tron GT weighs more than 5,000 pounds. The luxury electric vehicle market is clearly flourishing, and the RS E-tron GT represents the latest example of the type of sophisticated driving machine that can be acquired with a sufficient amount of money in the bank. While it falls short of Tesla in terms of range, it does little to improve on the slightly less expensive Taycan.
However, the E-tron GT’s exclusive Audi design is something that sets it apart from its competitors. It is a polished, malevolent participant in the luxury EV market, and it paves the way for the arrival of even more exceptional vehicles in the future. The E-tron GT proves that, with the right mix of technology and design, a multinational corporation can produce a product that is unique, powerful, and unmistakably its own.
