In 2021, the initial unveiling of the Jeep Magneto concept left the off-road community absolutely stunned. Despite the fact that hybrid Jeeps were not unheard of at the time, an all-electric Wrangler seemed far-fetched and unlikely to come to fruition anytime soon. The Jeep brand, known for its fervent enthusiasts, had a tall order to fill if they wanted to gain the support of its dedicated fanbase.
Enter the Magneto 3.0, which is touted as a more accurate representation of the final form of the electric Jeep Wrangler. While the elongated body, heavy-duty running gear, and 40-inch tires remain unaltered, Jeep has focused its efforts on enhancing the electric propulsion system to create a more capable off-road machine.
The latest iteration of the Magneto is equipped with a newly designed axial flux motor that is significantly more efficient than its predecessor. The motor’s fresh programming reportedly boosts its maximum torque output to a staggering 900 lb-ft, while also increasing usable energy and range by a considerable 20%. Two selectable power settings, Standard and Maximum, have been added to enhance the vehicle’s utility. The Standard setting grants drivers access to 285 horsepower and 273 lb-ft, while Maximum unleashes a jaw-dropping 650 horsepower and the full 900 lb-ft of torque.
The Magneto 3.0 also features an improved power regeneration mode that can be activated on the trails, but turned off during regular driving. When the transfer case is in low-range, drivers can select an “aggressive hill-descent mode” that enables one-pedal control of the vehicle, allowing for precision in challenging rocky terrain and steep hills. The dash-mounted switches allow for control over the regenerative brake, hill descent, and selectable power, while a fourth switch labelled ‘Air’ hints that the Jeep might be fitted with the AccuAir pneumatic suspension, which would permit adjustments to the lift height while on the move.
