Volvo Revives Rear Wheel Drive with 2023 XC40 and C40 RWD Recharge Models After 25 Year Hiatus

The fully electric Volvo C40 and XC40 models are getting a boost with new rear-wheel drive powertrain options, increased range, and faster charging capabilities. The single motor with standard range is now driven by a 175kW permanent magnet electric motor, providing a three percent increase in power output compared to the previous 170kW single-motor front-wheel drive variant. The XC40 Recharge single motor now has a 69kWh battery capacity with improved cooling efficiency, which allows for a range of up to 460 kilometers according to the WLTP test cycle, an improvement from 425 kilometers before. The C40 Recharge single motor has a range of up to 476 kilometers, an improvement from 438 kilometers (WLTP). A 10-80% charge takes approximately 34 minutes using a 130kW DC public charger. Additionally, customers can opt for a more powerful 185kW permanent magnet e-motor and an 82kWh battery pack, which increases the range to 515 kilometers for the XC40 Recharge single motor extended range and up to 533 kilometers for the C40 Recharge single motor extended range. Charging power has also been improved, with a top rate of 200kW DC and a 10-80% charge taking approximately 28 minutes.
