2023 Abarth 500e Electric Hot Hatch Media Test Drive

Fiat’s high-performance brand Abarth recently unveiled a refreshed version of the previous-generation 500, but this time, it’s a completely different car that sports a vibrant color. Unlike its predecessor, this new iteration of the popular Italian model is powered by an electric motor rather than a traditional combustion engine.

In terms of power, the regular Fiat 500 offers 117 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque that is instantly available. However, the Abarth variant takes things up a notch with 155 hp and 173 lb-ft of torque. While the difference of an additional 38 hp and 11 lb-ft might not seem significant, it actually makes a noticeable impact on the performance of this electric hot hatch. In fact, the Abarth version can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just seven seconds, a full two seconds quicker than its non-Abarth counterpart.

Abarth conducted several tests to showcase the electric hatchback’s superior speed when compared to the 695 model, which is equipped with a turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline engine. According to their findings, the electric version is able to reach speeds 12 to 25 mph faster. Additionally, a track comparison demonstrated that the electric hatch was a full second quicker than the Abarth 695 on the Misto Alfa Romeo circuit.

To ensure optimal performance, the zesty 500e comes equipped with a larger 42-kWh battery pack, which can be charged at a maximum rate of 85 kW. By plugging in the car for just five minutes, it is possible to gain approximately 25 miles of range, while a 35-minute charge can replenish the battery to 80 percent.

For those seeking an exclusive experience, there will be a limited edition launch model called Scorpionissima, with only 1,949 units available as a tribute to the year Abarth was founded. This special edition can be adorned in the attention-grabbing Acid Green paint or Poison Blue, both of which feature unique side graphics. Additionally, the spirited electric hatch rides on exclusive 18-inch wheels and boasts a range of upgrades, including a fixed glass roof, tinted rear windows, sporty metal pedals, and steel door sill plates.

Inside the cabin, the Abarth 500e offers body-hugging front seats that are not only heated but also upholstered in Alcantara with double stitching. The seats feature integrated headrests adorned with a laser-etched modernized Abarth logo in Acid Green, a motif that is also present on the steering wheel. Positioned to the right of a seven-inch digital driver’s display, there is a 10.25-inch touchscreen that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Despite its compact size, the Abarth 500e is packed with a range of features, including automatic headlights and windshield wipers, keyless access, a wireless smartphone charger, a 360-degree camera system, a JBL sound system, and automatic climate control. Additionally, the car includes a fake sound generator that mimics the engine noise of a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle, although this feature can be disabled for those who prefer a quieter experience.

It’s worth noting that the 2023 Abarth 500e isn’t limited to just the hatchback body style. It can also be enjoyed as a convertible, featuring a sleek black fabric roof and the same two body paint options.
