The First Porsche 911 Turbo

In 1973, the decade-old Porsche 911 was in need of a revamp. Its 3-liter engine had reached its limit, but lessons learned from turbocharging the 917 Can-Am racers could be applied to a production vehicle. Porsche introduced the 911 Turbo at the 1974 Paris Motor Show, becoming a leader in turbocharging technology. The first 911 Turbo prototype was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973, and was gifted to Louise Piëch for her 70th birthday in 1974. The factory initially planned a limited production run of 500 units, but overwhelming demand led to three production runs. The first Turbo delivered to customers was in March 1975 and cost about $24,000. The first production Turbo was identified by its own “930” prefix. The first 911 Turbo produced was a narrow-chassis Carrera, identified by its “Carrera” badge, with a unique 10,000 RPM rev counter and a 2.7-liter turbocharged engine, which remains unexplained by Porsche.
