The Alpine A290 β has been unveiled as an electric hot hatch featuring a centrally positioned driver

Renault is reviving the Renault 5 Alpine, which was first introduced in 1976, and was one of the original hot hatchbacks before the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The French automaker has previewed the subsequent production model of the A290_β, which will be released in 2024. The road-going car will be produced by the Renault Group in their Douai facility using the CMF-B EV platform.

The A290_β concept is based on the Renault 5 concept, which was revealed in early 2021, but with more emphasis on its sporty side. The car gets its classic quad lights and vertical taillights derived from the A470 endurance race car. It is finished in powder white with black hoods and roofs, and forged carbon surfaces with blue inserts on the lower part of the body.

The Alpine A290_β is only 159.4 inches (4.05 meters) long, but it rides on large 20-inch wheels with an unusual design that has a square cut in the center. The center-lock alloys proudly carry the French flag and are wrapped in Michelin-developed tires, which will also be supplied to the production model next year. The final version of the car won’t look as radical as the concept, but it should still give the Abarth 500e a run for its money.

The electric hot hatch is 72.8 in (1.85 meters) wide and 58.2 in (1.48 meters) tall. It features a McLaren F1-styled three-seat interior with the driver sitting in the center, slightly ahead of the two passengers cocooned by their carbon fiber bucket seats. The minimalist interior has an angular steering wheel inspired by this year’s LMP2 A470 and F1 A523 race cars.

Alpine doesn’t provide much information about the power of the A290_β, but the concept benefits from torque vectoring and a rear multi-link suspension. The latter has already been confirmed for the regular Renault 5, so it’ll be standard on the sporty variant as well. We also know that the car boasts a stiffer suspension setup, three driving modes (wet, dry, full), and four-piston Brembo brakes taken from the mid-engined A110 coupe.

It’s worth noting that the production-ready A290_β will be followed shortly by a GT-X Over crossover and the electric A110 replacement co-developed with Lotus.
