The 2024 BMW R 1300 GS Has Evolved

The 2024 BMW R 1300 GS is a significant step forward in the lineage of BMW’s esteemed adventure motorcycles, showcasing a blend of enhanced power, reduced weight, and technological advancements. The model embodies a larger 1300cc boxer-twin engine, promising an increased horsepower of 10 compared to its predecessor, and a new compact exhaust that pairs with a redesigned steel panel featuring a cut-out GS logo.

BMW Motorrad has taken the initiative to thoroughly overhaul this top-selling model, increasing its displacement from 1,254cc to 1,300cc, hence the updated name to R 1300 GS. The engine redesign results in a claimed 145 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque, marking an improvement from the 136 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque of the former R 1250 GS model. This enhancement not only provides a notable increase in peak torque but also ensures a substantial torque availability throughout a wide rev range. The repositioning of the engine within the frame aims to reduce vibration, leading to a smoother ride. A significant part of the weight reduction, amounting to 26 pounds, comes from the engine and powertrain modifications, with a new 2-into-1 stainless steel exhaust system further contributing to this feat.

The R 1300 GS also debuts a radar-based safety system alongside a notable weight reduction, offering a more streamlined and safer riding experience. The bike’s top speed is stated as 124 mph, with a commendable 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of 3.39 seconds. The integration of a six-speed gearbox now situated beneath the engine, rather than behind, hints at an improved power transmission and potentially better handling due to the centralized mass.

Beyond the engine and powertrain, the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS introduces a plethora of riding modes including standard modes like Road, Rain, Eco, and Enduro, and additional optional Pro modes that are customizable to the rider’s preference. The riding experience is further enriched with features like Engine Drag Torque Control (MSR), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Dynamic Brake Assist (DBC), and Hill Start Control (HSC) which are standard on this model.

The new chassis and suspension system encapsulate a steel sheet metal main frame replacing the former tubular-steel bridge main frame, and a die-cast aluminum unit replacing the former tubular-steel subframe. This results in a more compact, stiffer, and lighter chassis, improving both stability and handling. The suspension system sees an innovative design with the front Evo Telelever and rear Evo Paralever incorporating novel mechanisms for increased rigidity and improved stability, further enhancing the bike’s traction and handling dynamics.

The 2024 BMW R 1300 GS is not just a mere upgrade, but a comprehensive re-imagination of what the flagship GS model can offer to modern adventurers.
