Subaru Sport Mobility Concept Sports Car Revealed at Japan Mobility Show 2023

The Subaru Sport Mobility Concept was unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, showcasing what might be the electric version of the Subaru BRZ in the future. It’s a futuristic coupe that debuted alongside a six-rotor aircraft called the Air Mobility concept, hinting at Subaru’s vision of electric and aerial mobility. Although Subaru hasn’t released much technical detail about the concept, it is confirmed as a Battery Electric Vehicle with a design that appears to have a skateboard-type chassis placing the battery beneath the cabin. The concept might feature a low seating position for the driver, indicating a focus on sporty driving dynamics.

The interior of the concept vehicle seems near production-ready with a squared-off steering wheel and various control buttons for features like adaptive cruise control and voice control. The interior design resembles that of the Subaru Solterra, suggesting it might be underpinned by the Toyota e-TNGA platform. If that is the case, the concept could possibly feature a dual-motor all-wheel drivetrain with up to 308 horsepower, similar to the top-spec Lexus RZ which also uses this platform.

Visually, the Subaru Sport Mobility Concept has a two-door coupe design with sporting aspirations. It leans into Subaru’s rugged brand identity with chunky, squared-off bumpers and wheel arches, creating a fighter jet-like cockpit appearance over a body mostly comprising straight lines. Blue highlights in the front bumper, hood, wheel arch cutouts, and the wheels contrast with the abundant use of forged carbon fiber in the front bumper, wheel covers, and side panels of the car, although the exact amount of carbon fiber used to reduce the car’s weight remains unknown.

The Subaru Sport Mobility Concept embodies Subaru’s vision of enjoying driving in the age of electrification, emphasizing the pleasure of going anywhere, anytime, and driving at will in various environments. This concept might be foreshadowing the evolution of Subaru Sport, aligning with Subaru’s plans of introducing more electric vehicles by 2028.
