Porsche recently made an exciting announcement about its plan to develop an electric sports car powertrain-powered speedboat, known as the Frauscher x Porsche 850 “Fantom Air.” This innovative vessel will draw its power from the same powertrain that drives Porsche’s Macan EV, marking a significant move towards sustainable and electrified transportation on the water.
While we don’t have all the specifics just yet, Porsche’s vision for the “Fantom Air” is to build upon the existing Frauscher 858 hull, keeping most of its design intact. The real magic lies in the propulsion system, which will incorporate cutting-edge technology from the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric platform. This tech will not only power the “Fantom Air” but will also find its way into upcoming Porsche and Audi electric vehicles like the Macan EV and the Audi A6 e-tron.
What’s expected to power this waterborne marvel is a lithium-ion battery bank with a substantial capacity of around 100kWh. In comparison, the conventional “Fantom Air” 858 relies on traditional power sources, generating anywhere from 320 to 430 horsepower. While we don’t have all the details yet on the speed and cruising range of the new electric model, we anticipate that its performance metrics will turn heads once they’re unveiled. What’s confirmed, though, is that the 800V setup can take advantage of DC fast-charging stations, while AC charging remains a viable option.
Austria’s Frauscher Shipyard, nestled in Ohlsdorf, will be responsible for the production of these exciting electric speedboats. Initially, they plan to roll out a limited first-edition run comprising just 25 units, scheduled for delivery in 2024. As for pricing, we’ll have to wait a bit longer for those details to surface.
